Dear Utah Youth Soccer Parent, Coach, Administrator, Player,

Being the middle of the season, it is a good time to remind everyone that treating game officials with respect and kindness begins and ends with each one of us. We continue to see our referee numbers diminish and good young referees leave the game due to mistreatment by coaches, parents, players, etc. Last year we lost several hundreds of referees. The average age of referees in Utah is younger and younger every year. The mistreatment cannot continue and still maintain a quality league. Immediate steps are being taken against those found to have been involved in referee abuse or assault in any way.

Please assist your friends on the sideline, via your own example, to treat all referees, regardless of experience or talent, with respect and kindness. The longer we keep referees, the more experienced they become and the more capable they are of doing a great job for our kids on the field. The alternative is not a good one.

If you witness referee mistreatment in any degree, by anyone at all, please send me a note with the game date, time, teams and brief description. Our League Commissioner will investigate. Pres...@UtahYouthSoccer.net

If you are interested in signing up to become a referee or help out in any way, please also send me a note.

Our kids model what we display on the sidelines. Thank you for your help in this very important measure and best of luck to you in the remainder of the season!

Brian J. Smith
President
Utah Youth Soccer Association
