Behind the Scenes @ Rang De Part 5 Posted: 29 Sep 2010 06:59 AM PDT By Preena Deepak, Rang De Team Over the past month we have been constantly asking our volunteers how they got to know about Rang De and the end of this has been a series of interesting responses. It is amazing to note that the word about Rang De and its mission to do away with poverty has reached people through so many sources and on our part, we constantly strive to spread the message through newer media. This week’s featured editor, Shweta Roberts, chanced to read about Rang De during her student days at IIM Lucknow. She was introduced to Micro-finance as a subject and she bumped upon Rang De while researching for a case study on on-line micro lending. Fascinated by the novelty of Rang De’s operations, Shweta immediately decided to volunteer her services.
A telecom professional and a fresh graduate, Shweta’s cue is for proof reading and editing. Volunteering in this field is a hobby as well as a thrilling experience for Shweta who also pitches in as proof reader with Gutenberg, the largest on-line library. When asked about the magnetic attraction Rang De seems to have on her, Shweta replies “The small amount of Rs. 100 as the minimum threshold, the wide reach of Internet in terms of lenders availability and the increasing awareness in our social system to contribute to the have-nots are the few key points which foster my faith in the success of Rang De.”
The borrowers’ determinations to rise above their current situation is the main motivator for Shweta to edit profiles. Even though some content is insufficient to build a moving story around, the already updated profiles on the website have been a great help for volunteer editors like Shweta. She is also dynamic in keeping time-lines and makes sure that work is done much before the 24 hour deadline by editing after working hours. Passion like Shweta’s is certainly reflected in the content that goes on-line.
Though this may be the final edition of ‘Behind the Scenes’, there is certainly no end to the opportunities for volunteering with us and Rang De invites you to join in and share your professional expertise. If you find a couple of hours to spare each day or during weekends, editing, audio evaluations and several other prospects are just within your reach to make microcredit happen in the lives of India’s rural poor. All you need to do is drop an email to info[at]rangde[dot]org to express your interest. |

Engage, Share and Create Awareness! Join the Freedom Campaign Posted: 04 Oct 2010 07:10 AM PDT By Smita Ram, Rang De Team There was Peepli Live and then there was the Freedom Concert and now we have a ‘Freedom?’ Campaign. Beginning this Independence Day we have launched a series of campaigns around the theme of Freedom. It is not because of a lack of a better theme. It is because we believe that our country is not free in the ‘true’ sense of the word. When we have millions of people living below poverty line with no access to some basic amenities, it is a real shame that we even call ourselves an emerging nation. If one were to leave aside the IT boom, is there anything else that we have achieved as a country? The ‘Freedom?’ Campaign is an attempt by Rang De to emphasize on the lopsided nature of our economic growth or any development initiative for that matter. There are people around us with whom we interact and work with on a daily basis. While we get take for granted our access to finance, health care and education, there are people in our own eco-system who see this as a distant dream. Be it your domestic help, an office assistant you interact with, your friendly auto driver who drops you to office every day. Talk to them and share their story. You could share the story in the following ways: 1) If you believe pictures speak more than a 1000 words, send us a picture that tells the story. You can email your entries to fre...@rangde.org. Here is the campaign roll out plan: 4th October - 24th October: Rang De will accept entries. We will start show casing some of the stories during this period. 24th October to 2nd November: We will share all the stories and let you decide and vote for the best ones. 4th November: Announce the campaign winner - The winner is the individual whose story gets the maximum votes. Prize: The individual featured in the winner’s story will get a loan of upto a maximum of Rs.10,000. |
