Rang De : Giving Poverty A Knock Out Punch

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 11:42 PM PDT

By Rahul Anand, Rang De Delhi Chapter Member

One day During lunch time in the office I was interacting with some friends on twitter. Then I saw a tweet by a company called Rang De; a really cool name, it had a touch of patriotism with a dash of rebellion to change the system. I checked the link in the tweet and landed at http://rangde.org/, one of India’s 1st peer to peer micro lending platforms.

I registered on the portal, the site has an instant appeal to it with their message to Knock Out Poverty , just couldn’t help but press the ‘Invest Now’ link there were two options Microcredit and Education. In Microcredit there are six states to choose from, where in one can choose the category of micro enterprise for which one wants and also according to the needs of the person.

So, I invested 1000 bucks to give Chanda Nasker of West Bengal for her basket weaving business. The coolest thing about the whole interface is that one can virtually connect to people in need in some remote parts of the country, and invest in the change they want to bring in their lives. But frankly, after doing that I wasn’t sure that the money would really reach her. But nevertheless, I had a sense of satisfaction of doing something good even though I wasn’t completely sure the good I was promised would really happen.

After 2 days I get a mail from Rang De that my social investment has been disbursed by Sripur Swami Vivekananda Society (SSVWS), field partner of Rang De in West Bengal to Chanda Nasker and in around 10 days I get a 20 Rs/- back in my RangDe account. Apparently, she paid Rs 20 of the thousand rupees she took from Rang De for her enterprise.

RangDe.Org is a truly innovative initiative, the personal connect in this endeavor is unparalleled plus one gets 2% per annum return on the investment. Furthermore, the interests that the borrowers of RangDe pay are one of lowest in the country even in the MFI sector.

Rang De, true to it’s name is trying to paint a picture where there’s no poverty in India, I am really glad to contribute to this awesome social enterprise in my own small way.

So What are you doing?? Either make a social investment or reblog this post using the reblog button below.

Archana from the Rang De team gives feedback on the open house session.

Sometimes people of different teams within an organisation have very little idea about what members of the other teams are up to right? Well Rang De was no different till our whole team sat for a meeting in the same room for the first time (previous team meetings were over the phone) on Friday, which we have decided to call “The Rang De Open House”.

During the Open House, each team member shared their updates using a powerpoint presentation and got feedback from the rest of the team on their presentations and updates.  Although updates were shared on our weekly calls, they weren’t communicated as clearly as they were during the Open House. Some of the main things discussed were:

  • Audio evaluations - stay tuned to our social media to listen to them once they’re up on the site.
  • A Rang De fellowship program for people who are interested in doing short term work with us and our field partners.
  • Having more blogs from our operations team and more blogs on the microcredit and microfinance sector

Every month, organising the Open House will be the responsibility of one team member. We are open to learning and would like speakers to give quick workshops that would help the team in any respect. Do contact us at bl...@rangde.org should you like to contribute to our next open house. It will be towards the end of June.

Rang De Operations

If one wonders what keeps the Rang De operations team busy and how a profile of a borrower comes up on the web for social investors to browse through, here are a few insights.

The “Uploading of profiles” process, as we call it, is considered to be our most important and time bound activity. The idea is to bring the the borrower profiles up on the web as quickly as possible for the
social investors to see and invest. This helps the team in raising funds quickly.

The application process starts from the field, where loans officers of our field partners processes loan applications and takes digital photographs of the borrower. The photographs are taken at borrower’s place of business, this helps in visually communicating the purpose of loan. The applications are of course processed by the loan officers after a due diligence process.

The applications then reach Rang De and the screening process starts. At times there are information gaps in the application forms and more information is sought from the field. One of the key challenges in the whole process is the information gap in loan application process. Data relating to family, health, assets, education status, income, expenditure and loan is captured and it takes a lot of hand holding for the field partners to correctly fill in all the required data. Once the applications are screened and and team is satisfied, data is fed into the system and the profiles are published.

Ops team works with a target of 2 days from the date of receipt of applications to publishing of data. So, just in case you observe a delay, a photograph mismatch, a typo or anything of that sort you know whom to catch hold off!

Bricks and bouquets are always welcome :)

As part of the Rang De loan process, we evaluate some of our borrowers on a periodic basis to ensure that our low interest loans help borrowers save money which they can spend on education, healthcare, and sanitation and also for them to get out of the poverty cycle. We have collected a few of our borrower evaluations and present them to you in our first edition of the Rang De Success Story Digest.

As we intend to make this digest a monthly digest, We would like to include more content on the impact our loans to borrowers in upcoming digests and we would like to hear from you what you would like to see on the digest.  Just comment on this post, email us at blog[at]rangde[dot]org or get in touch with us on facebook or twitter.
