Hi Rando Kin,

Anyone have experience, feedback, or recommendations on 'summer weight' wool jerseys? Ever since I started riding a velomobile the funk buildup on my back when wearing a standard synthetic jersey on a warm to hot day is rapid, pronounced, and personally unbearable after even shorter rides. I'm wondering if wool might help alleviate the stink, or at least extend the time before I can't stand to be around myself, but I worry that this fabric will be too hot. Any useful bits of jersey advice or other options for killing the stench?

Thanks

Jim Howell

Hey Jim
I looked into this topic for the same reason you are, but for the Sweden ride, because I was wearing the same jersey multiple days.  I think wearing wool worked well for "smell management", though maybe Vernon would disagree with me on that point!😂😂  I got one SS jersey from Walz which was a little more $ but is really nice.  And I found these for a reasonable price: Crossfire Merino SS
Ordinarily I do not like black jerseys but for the price I tried it.  It is very nice.  Unfortunately it looks like only a small one is available, but maybe you can find it elsewhere.
I also found this Canyon Jersey but unfortunately it does not have any rear pockets and that's a deal breaker for me; maybe that is better for you in the velomobile.

I am partial to Pinebury’s summer weight wool jersey (https://pinebury.us/products/summer-wool-ss-cycling-jersey-faded-blue?_fid=c2ebee0b4&_pos=10&_ss=c).

The only downside I have noticed with lightweight wool is that the pockets tend to stretch more.

Hey all,

I have been wearing lightweight wool jerseys throughout my rando time and highly recommend the lightweight Cima Coppi lightweight jerseys and Velocio’s Merino Concept jerseys. The Velocio’s are by far and away my favorite and very lightweight though they are pretty racey in their fit.

Best,
Nyssa

I can second Nyssa's recommendation of the lightweight Cima Coppi jerseys. I wear mine for a wide range of temperatures, and if you're far from the dimensional mean like myself, they will make them in custom sizing.

Hi Jim,

I can't speak to the velomobile experience, but I bought a pair of Rapha classic jerseys after my wife indicated that my polyester cycling apparel had become permanently, offensively stinky. It's a merino/polyester blend, and I've worn it on plenty of hot days in Utah and Colorado (including this last season's Central Utah 400k, where we met briefly before you sped off in your velomobile, never to be seen again). The fabric does a good job of keeping away the stink, and they look pretty good too.

Best,

Brady

Hi all,

I used Icebreaker merino for 5 years now … and no jersey. I just put a Voler vest on top of my Icebreaker base layer. I really like this config:
1. Easy thermal management with Voler 2 way zipper
2. No need to add a vest downhill
3. No odors
4. Just need to pack another base layer when I do multiple day rides

Hope it helps,

Raphaël

Hi Raphael,

I hadn't considered that one could use a different base layer each day but use the same jersey - unless soiled - on a multiple ride tour. Anyone else do this?

Drying the days cycling togs after washing in the hotel/GH/B&B sink is a chore, but it is what I do. Nice not to have to - as long as I am riding solo and don't arrive at the next night's stop smelly. :-)

Thanks all for the great feedback! I'll start saving my pennies for a summer weight merino jersey! :-)

I've also started hand washing the stinky pieces of kit and adding a touch of bleach to kill off the little stinky beasties, which I think helps and also confirms that washing with other clothes and sometimes with softener is probably part of the reason why sometimes the stink comes on early and strong, so good tips on that, and using vinegar, which I'll also try...

Thanks again!

Jim

One bit of advice for cleaning stinky bike gear: I use the cheap VO5 shampoo one can buy in Kroger at around a dollar. I soak the clothes in a bucket with hot water and a healthy splurge of the shampoo, stir it around, let it sit for a while then rinse and hang to dry. I suspect it's the lye in the shampoo that is doing the de-fugging job.
