to Randonneurs USA
Everybody,
I’ve been using a Garmin Edge 1040 for a year now with minimal issues. Mostly, I just use it to record routes that I know by memory, but it did get me through navigating and recording a SR series this year.
Before leaving the US for Paris - Brest this year, I downloaded the out and back routes posted by the ACP to OpenRunner. I did it using Garmin’s recommended method: download the route from OpenRunner, upload it to Garmin Connect, load it onto my 1040 from there. When I was done, I disconnected the 1040 from the computer and loaded both routes successfully, with map.
Given my well-earned suspicion of Garmin’s software quality, I turned the 1040 on today and tried to load the routes. No route, no map, just a white screen with a blue dot to indicate my location. Same for the map page in my Workout data screens.
I noticed that when the 1040 booted up, it displayed a message at the bottom of the screen saying “failed to get basemap version”. A little googling indicated that that message is generated by a missing /Garmin/gmapbmap.img file. There the trail goes dark. One post on the Garmin forum posted a gmapbmap.img file and said it would fix the problem. It didn’t. Another post said that the only way to get a working gmapbmap.img was to send the unit back to the factory.
I know there are some savvy Garmin users out there. Do any of you know a fix for this problem? Many, many thanks in advance it you do.
Bonne route,
Roger
