Two updates since the originals from 2022 are included in this series of perms.

1. We will have a long wait for Hwy 1 in Calif. to be repaired. The 2024 landslides there are still unstable. CalTrans is now using remote-controlled equipment since it is deemed too dangerous for workers to go in.

2. Astoria Bridge from Illwaco, WA to Astoria, OR, is legal for cyclists, but 4 miles of narrow-2 lane on the antique bridge is not for the faint of heart. So the series shows two ways to go--either ride the bridge, or stop in Illwaco, and take a bus across.

And as always, a shout-out to Crista, our RUSA Permanista, for reviewing, improving and approving the routes.

This is pretty much the coolest thing ever!

The one consideration is that Kitty makes use of campgrounds most of the way, but if you’re traveling lighter and sleeping in hotels, that may require some extra milage w/o RUSA credit on a number of days so you can start/finish at the specified locations.

Note that this has a lot in common with another RWGPS Collection, Canada to Mexico, with routes from 2021. I believe the older Collection is "the originals from 2022" that Kitty mentioned.

Some more specifics on the updates follow.

1. The addition of Perm 5313 Westport to Ilwaco.
This avoids the Astoria Bridge. Kitty suggests a bus transfer to Astoria from Ilwaco.

3. New routing to avoid the Highway 1 closure at Regent's Slide.
Old Collection:
#4230 Capitola to Big Sur
#4222 Big Sur to San Simeon (currently impassable)
#4223 San Simeon to Lompoc
New Collection:
#5229 Capitola to Greenfield (includes first part of detour)
#5234 Greenfield to Plaskett Creek (includes second part of detour)
#5235 Plaskett Creek to Morro Bay
#5236 Morro Bay to Lompoc

3. The new Collection has a segment that is missing from the old one:
#4238 Torrance to San Clemente.

Is there any other documentation such as information about services, particularly at the start/finish locations?

Finally, how similar or different is this to the Adventure Cycling Association Pacific Coast route?

Thank you, Kitty and Crista,

Thanks to Kitty for the routes, this might be on my radar for next year with following much of the route but probably as a ride only - less the rando aspect of it for sight-seeing convenience. Sort of like LeJog.
