I like Brooks saddles a great deal. Not happy with the weight penalty that much though. I have ridden a Swift and B17 both with Ti rails. I like the comfort of the B17 but when I'm in a more race like position or spinning fast the skirts tend to rub my thighs. I like the swift because it doesn't do this however it tends to give more then a B17 and ultimately I find I'm riding on the rivets. Is it fair to assume that the Pro is a happy medium? Or is it so different in stiffness and shape that it's a whole new animal?

Tim,

I rode a B-17 for about 1,000 miles. About 250k into a 300k I decided
it was too wide. It hit the back of my left thigh, and what was
sometimes annoying on shorter rides turned painful on the 300k. I
also tried a Swift but found it too narrow, pretty much sat in the
edges. So now I am on a Ti Team Pro. I only have about 500 miles on
it (of which 250 were our 400k last weekend) but so far seems very
similar to the B-17, except it doesn't hit my thighs. Being that its
not totally broken in it got a bit painful during the last part of
the 400k, but I hope a few more miles make it more comfortable.

The Pro is narrower than the B17 and just a bit wider than the Swift. The
leather on the Pro tends to be just a bit thicker than the leather on the
other saddles, so it takes a bit longer to break in, and it has the least
give.

I have found that the leather takes a set better, when the weather is
warmer, and if its cold out they don't tend to move.

Tim,

Since you mention weight as an issue, won't the Pro be heavier than either saddle you mentioned ? If you're not concerned with weight it might work for you though. I ride Pro's on both my Alex Singer and Saluki (both with bars below saddle level) and find no issues with the skirts and my admittedly skinny thighs, even when in the drops.

Can't comment on the shape and stiffness compared to a B17 but compared to a Swift it's much tauter (in my opinion) with less "hammocking" than my Swift. Both fit me okay but the Pro is more comfortable overall.

As with anything saddle related, it's all so very personal in what works and what doesn't.

I am often confused by the weight penalty that a Randoneer may
encounter using a Brooks Saddle. Just how much is the penalty over a
non-Brooks saddle? It's not like we are gold medal time trial experts.

BTW: I ride on a B17 which I selected for the comfort factor.

Yes, I'm a Randoneer but I aspire to do other silly things on my bike. Such as ride a 12/24 on my fixed gear. I realize I'm no way a twig myself. In fact I resemble a marshmallow but on a ride like a 12/24 I'll take anything I can get even if its psychological. So, sometimes if your bike feels light you do too even if you don't look the part.

You could always chop the b17...I am admittedly too scared to give this
a try, but many people do it.

I don't know, paying close to $200 bucks for a saddle and then cutting seems a little scary to me as well.

I did purchase a Brooks Pro to try. I know it will be harder then a B17 but I'm hoping the tail is wide enough for comfort and the nose is narrow enough to keep my legs from rubbing. I got the new Ti version so the weight is a little lower not that it matters much.

Also, it has bag loops and even thought I do not use a carradice or back that requires the loops it's nice to have them for the times when I need to lash extra clothing etc to it.
