Am wondering if anyone makes a tinted or clear, interchangeable eye
shield that attaches to an ordinary road helmet to use in place of
sunglasses (or to use with prescription glasses). Ideally, a shield
about 3 inches in depth that wraps around the front of the helmet to
maximize visibility, yet doesn't go so far down as to cover the whole
face.

Something like this, but not jerry-rigged: http://www.instructables.com/id/All-Weather-Bike-Helmet/

This is too long: http://www.windeflect.com/

And another for TT helmet only (and $45!).

I am pretty sure that they used to be available --they had a notch for
the nose and velcro to attach to the helmet.

Anyone know where I can get one?

Jenny,

The WinDeflect looks like exactly what you want. Is the short (4.5"
long) version of the WinDeflect too long? If it was much shorter it
might not provide much protection - consider that the brim of a helmet
is a good inch or so above one's eyebrows. The 7" version is pretty
extreme, though. A steady hand with a dremel might be able to cut one
of these down nicely.

For years I used a face shield because my eyes are sensitive to the
wind, and glasses were not enough protection. I attached a clear
lens, so at night or in the rain, all I had to do was take off my
sunglasses - no worries about changing glass lenses, and it was great
for bugs. The problem was that even though the set up came as if you
could snap on and snap off the face shield, it would not stay - so I
glued it in place. For about 4 years I used this set up and was happy
- except when it was hot out - no breeze on my face, it would be very
warm. As it turns out, last January I went to Australia, brought my
bike, but had a new very light helmet - and no face shield. My eyes
were ok, so I rode all of last year, including PBP, with out the
shield. I did miss it when early in the morning after the first
overnight ride on PBP, a bat flew into my face.
Here's where I got it from:
