It may not be the connection between your computer and phone, but the availability of cell service where you were riding.  No Service is the worst battery killer I have experienced out in the rural roads or in mountains.

Today, my iPhone did not even make it to the end of 100 K. It shows 81%
maximum capacity right now for “battery health” on this 2 to 3 year-old
phone. Do I need to disable the connection between my GPS and the phone
while I’m riding to save the phone battery? There’s really no reason to
have them talking to each other, other than notifications of texts.

Richard – I don’t use an Elemnt – I use a Cateye Padrone Smart+ -- When I am doing a 200km or longer ride in remote areas I sometimes switch to airplane mode. That reduces significantly my iPhone 15 pro battery usage. I turn off my notifications options for most of my apps before starting a brevet when not in Airplane mode.

+1 for airplane mode. Phones use a lot of power searching for a wireless
signal where there is no coverage.

The Wahoo Elemnt app is notorious for high battery usage. I use both a Wahoo Roam, with the Elemnt app running on my Android phone, and a Garmin 1040, with the Garmin Connect app running. (Both apps running simultaneously.) The Garmin is the one set up to display text messages, but the Elemnt app uses way more phone battery than the Connect app. In fact, the Elemnt app drains my phone battery faster than the ROAM drains its own battery. This issue has been present for years, and through many app and ROAM updates.

Wahoo should really get an expert in Android app battery optimization to figure out what's wrong. I'm not sure if there is a similar issue with the iPhone app.

Something to be aware of with RWGPS, downloading maps for offline use is great but the app only uses them if you're in airplane mode (this is iphone, not sure of android but I expect its the same). This is easy to see if you're in an area with no service....it won't show you the map until you turn airplane mode on. One would think that it would always use the downloaded map even when the phone has service but sadly, that's not the case.

Also, despite what their instructions say, I've had very good luck turning on battery save mode on an iphone, this seems to extend battery life quite a bit. I'm not running the rwgps app, just using bluetooth to get turn by turn directions from my garmin edge.

Temperature affects battery life so if you're riding somewhere chilly, maybe put your phone in your pocket.

It’s likely less about the phone-to-gps connection than it is about the phone itself. The “hunt” for a strong signal can kill things, as well as the constant updating. I’m certain there’s a ton of strategies from different folks. Here’s some thoughts.

- turn on “low power mode”. Helps kill a lot of background processes which can drain battery. this is the base and starting point. The rest of the suggestions are more finagling within the same, and may be duplicative of just entering this mode.

- make sure other apps, particularly mail apps (Mail, Outlook, Gmail, etc.) and News apps are not updating in the background.
- turn off WiFi so it’s not on a constant hunt. This can be particularly draining when background apps are trying to update (mail updating over a weak WiFi seems to be an instant drain).
- you can choose to turn off Bluetooth as well, and as you know, this will break the connection to your Elemnt.
- turn off Cellular data. You’ll still get and make calls.

Build a group of settings you like, and create a Focus around them so they are accessible.

In addition, or instead, if you’re not scared of a few extra grams, get a battery pack. I like one with a magsafe connection, and have a USB-C to USB-mini cable I carry with. this way i can charge the phone with the MagSafe, as well as have a way to charge the GPS and/or my Vario radar.

Of course, remembering to charge is always important. Dynamo based USB chargers are not yet on my list, but maybe someday….
