I admire the simplicty of the single speed dirve train, maintenance issues are so limited comapare to a geared bike.  I just can make those wjheels go round on a ride like PBP W/O gears.

I should get my bike back from the shop today.  The bike and drive train are pretty new though there are enough miles on it to warrant a serious tune up.  The wheel set is older and they have served well.  The mechanic knows his stuff (knows my riding, and built the wheels), so took the rear hub apart (older Chorus hub and newer 10 speed cassette) to have a look.  He said the hub needed work and wound up replacing some worn parts.

I never would have thought it would need work as I broke the pawl spings on Van Isle 1200 in 2006 and had it rebuilt after that.  I also had PW do some work on my Schmidt hub last month (been riding that in rainy NW weather since winter 2001).  It is reassuring to have this business taken care of.  If you have not been into the hubs, BB, or head set since PBP '03 it might be worth having a good mechanic give them at least a cursory look.  I'm slow enough that time dedicated to mechanicals would definitely take away form some other very important elements (sleeping, eating, schmoozing, riding).

All that is left for the bike is to put on the new tires and bottles and then recalibrate the speedo.
