So I was changing out the rear brake cable & housing in preparation
for BMB when I found a crack in my frame...The rear brake cable is
internally routed along the top tube, and there's a crack going
around almost half of the frame at the rear cable. I've no clue how
long it's been there, but probably not more than a month.
I've got a friend of mine who could probably weld it. He's a union
welder, a real craftsman. But I'm a little concerned because it's a
Cro-moly steel frame. The stickers just below the crack reads, "Koga-
Miyata Spine Reinforced Hardtlite (sic) Tubing... Hardtite FM-1
Chrome Molybdenum Triple Butted Tubing."
I called my local bike shop mechanic, and he was pretty concerned
about it. He said it was real thin tubing, and he wasn't sure if it
could be repaired.
Alright...so what should I do? I've got another bike, a lugged, old-
school Raleigh that I could ride. I could get the frame repaired,
but I think I'd be worried about the frame failing on me. I don't
want to have my frame fold up on me while descending Middlebury Gap
at night...What do people think?

Time for a new frame?
If you like steel, the Gunnar Sport (made by Waterford) is a real good production frame and fork at a good price.
About $850. Of course, you'll have to find a bike shop that stocks their frames.
I wouldn't chance BMB with any of your current bikes...
My wife didn't offer any resistance when my titanium frame cracked and I
said I needed a new frame. Cracked frame is a good excuse to get a new one.

How about contacting the shop you bought it from and asking about the
frame's warrantee?

If you decide to ride BMB on your old-school lugged Raleigh, you will have some company at least! I'll be there on a 1974 Raleigh Professional. It's the most comfy bike I've ever sat on.

I think I'm going to pursue getting the top tube replaced, since it's
a lugged frame. From the responses it seems like people think I'm
riding some super light frame. It's actually a Koga-Miyata touring
frame. I never thought it was all that light, but maybe that's just
because it's 66cm tall & outfitted with Araya 700x35 rims..
