I regret to inform all Randonneurs that during the Shenandoah 1200K on Jun 13,
2010, we lost one of our endeared Randonneur members. Chuck Howes from
Massachusetts passed away during the ride. I am truly saddened by the passing
and I know all of you feel the same sentiment. Please say a prayer for
Chuck's wife and family in this time of loss. Chuck's brother in law Tim
Leedham encouraged us to continue to ride and enjoy our sport as that is the
way Chuck would have wanted it.

How did he die? An accident or something medical?

I believe the cause is still unknown, I was about 2-3 hours behind
Chuck at the time, but saw the Woodstock ambulances coming back from
the scene and felt at the time something happened to a rider.
Preliminary speculation is heart attack. It occurred in the early
morning (pre-twilight) on the 4th day of the ride, on what I would say
was probably the "easiest" but also a very remote and beautiful
section of the route between Harrisonburg (1400') and Front Royal
(600') lots of river grade down hill with one 800' climb and much less
redundant climbing relative to the rest of the route. Chuck was with
another rider; however, with no cell service in this remote region of
the route in the Fort Valley area, the rider had to ride to find a
house to use their phone to call 911. I was told 45 minutes for first
responders.

What I will remember from Chuck, though I didn't know him well, was at
one of the controls he put a piece of ham on his plate, a slice of
cheese on top, then mustard, rolled it up and consumed. Me and
another rider thought this was a great idea and we all had meat/cheese/
mustard roll ups.
