I was looking at the K-Edge XL mounts to use with a Garmin Edge 1000. Can anybody confirm/deny that the mount covers the USB connector on the Edge 1000? I want to be able to power the 1000 from a separate battery pack, or a Sinewave, but from what I can see, it looks like the K-Edge might cover it just perfectly. Or, is it possible to "flip" the mount?

Thanks,
Pete

The K-Edge XL indeed blocks the USB port when in portrait mode. I happen to prefer the landscape orientation, where you can get a USB cable in with no problems.

The Bar Fly 3.0 MTB Garmin mount works very well for me and does not cover the charge port on the Garmin Edge 1000. I recently used this set up with the Sinewave Revolution and a Limefuel blast 6000 Mah external battery for pass through charging on a 2200 k unsupported brevet in Italy. Everything was flawless
except:

Having the charging port on the underside of the Edge 1000 connected to a charging cord for very long periods of time seems to make the port loosen up a bit. In the future I will reinforce the connection with electrical tape or some other beefy tape. Also the Garmin charging cord might provide more stability at the connection to the GPS than some other branded charging cords with a narrower base of plastic located adjacent to the male end of the charging cord.

You might not want to keep the Garmin on constant charging while riding long multi day events in order to give the charging port connection a rest while bumping along.

I'll bet Garmin improves this Edge 1000 charging port on the next Edge model.

Hi Pete,

As others have noted, the K-Edge mount does indeed cover the USB connector on the Edge 1000.  The alternative mentioned by Doug M. of the Bar Fly 3.0 MTB mount is certainly an option but note that it mounts the unit over the stem (which mountain bikers prefer as it's safer in a crash).  I prefer to have the unit out front and therefore like the K-Edge better.

A simple solution that unblocks the USB port is to remove the two small screws that hold the GPS mount in place, flip the unit over and install the mount on the reverse side.  I've done this with mine and the Garmin is still very secure in the mount and the USB port is readily accessible for charging.  I've used the Edge 1000 on a couple of brevets that included some very rough roads and no issues with either the security of the GPS mount or charging.

I can post some photos later if my description isn't clear.

This has worked very well for me. It puts my 810 out front where I like it as well as having access to the USB port for charging on rides above 14 hrs. https://www.sram.com/sram/road/products/quickview-computer-mount

Yes, but I don't think it'd work with the Edge 1000 (at least it doesn't list it as one of the supported Edge models) and that's what Pete was after.

It should work with any Garmin that has that type of twist mount. I think the 1000 was not out yet when they page was created for this mount. The Garmin XL mount drops the Garmin to be about equal height as the stem, whereas the SRAM mount puts the connection above the stem. It is this reason that I use the SRAM mount on my brevet bike instead of the K-Edge mount which I use on all my other bikes.

Now after looking at some images of the Edge 1000 and finding that the Garmin MOVED the charging port from the position it is on the 810, it would look like this mount would work for the 1000. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/shop-by-accessories/mounts/extended-out-front-bike-mount/prod136771.html

It's not a question of whether the mount will work, as you say, they're the same for all Edge models. The issue is the size. The Edge 1000 is larger than the 5xx, 7xx, 8xx models so it requires a longer stem. Using the one you initially posted with the 1000 would result in the garmin hitting the stem when it was only halfway twisted onto the amount and not fully seated. An XL model is required and many of them, including the K Edge, block the USB port.

I think you are getting two issues mixed up. The 1000 will fit on the K-Edge XL mount according to the K-Edge site http://www.acecosportgroup.com/k-edge-computer-mounts/garmin-computer-mounts/k-edge-computer-mount-for-garmin-edge-and-forerunner-gps-computers.html. However, the mount will block the USB port on the 1000, but not block the USB port on the 810. Depending on the USB cable you have, you could still use the XL mount on the 810.

The Garmin mount that I had posted from the Garmin site https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/shop-by-accessories/mounts/extended-out-front-bike-mount/prod136771.html WILL work with the 1000 and NOT block the USB port.

The problem I see with the K-Edge is that it is not designed with the Randonneur in mind. It is designed for the day rider or racer who wants the mount out front and low. This will cause problems with any charging of the Garmins without the proper type of USB cable.

Greg,
Thanks for the information. That's what I meant when I asked if the mount could be "flipped", so I understand what you're saying. That would also raise the computer a bit higher too.
The Garmin Out Front mount comes packed with the Edge 1000, but it doesn't put it out very far, and a USB plug is against the stem when inserted, and the computer is mounted. It might be fine, but would prefer the USB plug not be carrying any loads.
If another mount works well for the random bike, I'll demote the Garmin mount to my commuter bike.

I was also looking at the K-Edge with the GoPro mount. Not certain I'll mount one, but if I'm spending money...

I like the stock Garmin mount, but reversed so it holds the Edge 1000 over the stem. Lots of clearance for the usb so it works fine for charging underway. The K-Edge doesn't let you do this at all...
