Very interesting interview with Allen Lim, PhD on nutrition while riding. Lim is the nutritionist for the Shack and other pro teams:

     http://www.fatcyclist.com/2011/12/13/avoid-gut-rot-on-long-rides/

His key points include:
  • We're each an experiment of one
  • Eat 1/2 your caloric hourly burn rate every hour
  • Real food is better
  • Stay hydrated
  • Sodium is critical
He's obviously right since I've made the same points on my website :-)

I'm a relative newbie to our sport and get lots of nausea after 300 k
or so. What I find to work best is Ensure Plus and I drank about 25
or so 8 oz bottles of the milk chocolate variety on PBP. It worked
real well. What do you think of this approach?

I'm somewhat surprised that you could get Ensure on PBP, where did you get it?

I find it sort of perplexing that some call Ensure a sports drink in
the same category as Gatorade. I found Ensure to be a decent sub for
real food. In fact, I had less than three smallish meals of regular
food in my entire 87 hours and 40 minute relatively slow PBP. Ensure
was my only real sustanence. And I bet not many Rando riders get
diarrhea with it either. I sure didn't.

As others have said, we are all an experiment with sample size, n=1.
Due to some minor problems with my upper GI tract on longer rides I
used to supplement my dietary requirements with Boost and Ensure but
got tired of carrying the bottles and relying on drop bags, so I bit
the bullet and went "cold turkey" to Perpetuem for my sole energy
source for all of my rides other than my daily commute. Although I'm
only a "casual" rider, it has worked out well for me, but at the end
of 90 hour - actually I'm an 88 hour kind of guy - I'm getting a
strong hankerin' for a something with more desirable organoleptic
properties.

I didn't know Ensure was available in powder form or I may have
considered that, although having tried the bottles for a couple of
days, I got the feeling I was living on warm milk shakes.

I have no ties with Hammer Nutrition, but in agreement with others,
now that I'm strictly onto drinking Perpetuem, I should look for
sponsorship but I'm not sure that I'd make a good spokesperson, as i
have to admit that with Perpetuem I just hold my nose and swallow -
knowing that it will be good for me once I get that swallow down into
my stomach. Another benefit of using having replaced my normal water
bottles with Perpetuem is that it also forces me to remain hydrated -
and it has been formulated to be mild coming back up, and I have to
admit that the strawberry favor tastes almost better going down the
second time.
