Today, my iPhone did not even make it to the end of 100 K. It shows 81% maximum capacity right now for “battery health” on this 2 to 3 year-old phone. Do I need to disable the connection between my GPS and the phone while I’m riding to save the phone battery? There’s really no reason to have them talking to each other, other than notifications of texts.

Richard – I don’t use an Elemnt – I use a Cateye  Padrone Smart+ -- When I am doing a 200km or longer ride in remote areas I sometimes switch to airplane mode. That reduces significantly my iPhone 15 pro battery usage. I turn off my notifications options for most of my apps before starting a brevet when not in Airplane mode.

+1 for airplane mode. Phones use a lot of power searching for a wireless signal where there is no coverage.

Thanks for the link James. Yeah I’m well aware of putting my phone into airplane mode but typically not on 100 km ride. When I’m doing longer backcountry ski or hiking trips, I always put it in airplane mode.
Honestly, I just think my phone battery is starting to crap out and needs to be replaced

I used to ride with an iPhone SE w/RWGPS and a dynamo hub charging while I rode.  With the screen off and in "low power mode" I could navigate indefinitely using just RWGPS on the phone app.  When I later upgraded to an iPhone 13, however, the phone's software would no longer accept dynamo hub charging.
On advice of a trusted friend, I bought a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt, and using that for navigation and my dynamo hub, I again can use the Bolt indefinitely (as long as I break down my routes into 150mile - 200mile pieces).  I don't find any phone battery issues with the (minimal) Bluetooth communications between the Bolt and the iPhone, at least, not so far.  I do carry a spare external battery for longer rides, but I almost never have to use it.

Richard,

Did your iPhone update to ios 18? (Might have happened in the background without action by you.) There seem to be complaints about increased power consumption. You might want to look into that.
