Thanks for the interesting jet lag article. I travel from the midwest-USA to Europe occasionally for business and have gained an ability to immediately function (at least enough for business meetings) on local time upon arrival. I use the supplement melatonin a few days before departure to start adjusting my bio clock and then some larger doses to get a full night's sleep once in Europe.
However, for PBP 2003 I took a completely different approach since I had signed up for the 10PM/90 hour start. Instead of forcing myself to stay awake all day upon arrival and to avoid naps the first few days, I just let my body do what it seemed to need. I figured that I would be so messed up by riding through the night and then needing to sleep in the afternoon the next day, that why bother to acclimate to local time? I think it worked well, as I was able to complete the ride with two sleep stops, both in Loudeac and both in mid-afternoon, which meant riding straight through three nights. In addition, I was able to get a nap before the 10PM start, which I think helped.
At least this worked for me...

I know certain special forces personnel that use Modafinil :

Apparently the word is out 'cause I heard the college kids are doing it pretty
regularly in some areas.

In tests Provigil can allow wakefulness with good alertness for up to 48 hours. It is not a stimulant so people can go to sleep at any time. And yes. the military has used it extensively in combat arenas. I read one review where the reviewer "fell in love with it." Due to the Ability to function on very little sleep for extended periods of time.
