Hello,
I am planning my trip to Boston for BMB this year and am trying to book my flights and plan how to ship my bikes. Does anyone have any recommendations, airline vs. Fedex, etc.? We are also considering flying into Albany, NY since we are going there after the ride to see from friends.
Thanks,
Devin

I've had good luck with UPS--you just need to find a recipient. The
airlines also have been no problem, just costly. If you are an LAB
member, I think they have an agreement with a travel agency that waives
the fees if you book through that agent.

For domestic travel, I have had good luck with Sports Express. I have used them for the last four years to ship my bike from Boston to Tucson for the PAC Tour Desert Camp in AZ. They are experienced in handing sports equipment of all kinds. They come to your house or office to pick it up and they closely track it to its destination to insure it doesn't get lost. I have not had any good experience with UPS on big, long distance shipments and wouldn't trust my bike to them.

That's my 2 cents.

My experience with UPS is mixed. I have shipped to a bike shop who set it up for me - no problem. Other times I have shipped it via UPS and the bike was OK, but the bike box (the hard plastic kind) got trashed twice with the wheels ripped off. No compensation either time. And, one time UPS temporarily "lost" the bike and box although it did show up a day late. No problem on airplanes although it is very expensive to carry it as shipped luggage. There are numerous urban legends describing ways to avoid the surcharge; for each story there is another telling of airines flying international routes (which do not charge extra for bikes, per one of the international conventions) and wrongly imposing non-refundable surcharges. If you book through the travel agency associated with Adventure Cycling you get a free bike pass, but you may pay more for the air fare. Good bet: drive to the ride and carry the bike with you. Better bet: ride to the start of the event. Best bet:
you fly
and have a friend volunteer to drive the bike to the event. Bottom line: try what you will and hope for the best.

I've had positive experiences using FedEx Ground to ship bicycles.
They've been less expensive than UPS, and the delivery times were
comparable. I gave up on UPS when they told me that the bicycle I was
shipping had to be double-boxed.

Of course, make sure you pack carefully, using foam pipe insulation,
blocks for the dropouts, etc. And although my wife will chide me for
this, use more tape than you think you need.

I have used Fedex Ground service for shipping my bike and have never had
a problem. They are very reasonably priced, less than UPS. With the
shipping number you can even check on the delivery status over the
phone. As has already been stated in a previous reply be sure to pack
the bike carefully. I use a Crateworks box and I have added additional
layers of heavy duty bubble wrap around the bike, I got a very large
piece of bubble wrap from a furniture store.

If you join USA Cycling for $50 per year you can ask for two free United vouchers for your bike. Since United usually charges $75 each way that will save you $100. The vouchers I received did not have an expiration date so they should be good beyond this year.

Here is their web site. Once you sign up you have to request the the vouchers by going thru the "Riders Resources" then "Membership Benefits" links.
