We had a discussion a while back about whether and why massage works to relieve pain and promote recovery. A new study indicates that at the cellular level massage turns off the genes associated with inflammation (thus relieving pain) and turns on the genes that promote the production of new mitochondria. Mitochondria are the minute blood vessels within the cells where energy is actually produced:
