"Mark from Florida had folding pliers, he stopped, lent them to me, and I
got my front fender removed.  Thanks Mark, you helped me finish."

Not meaning to be a scolding nanny but have you added pliers to your kit?  I find that some sort of pliers are often needed when your bike involves fenders.  I have a little tiny faux Leatherman tool that goes in my kit.  When I unpacked my bike in SQYone of my fenders was partially crushed.  I used my little pliers to reshape it to approximatley the curve needed.  Of course those who disdain fenders will quiclkly point of that if I didn't have fenders I would not have needed the pliers. This is not meant as an advertisement for fenders, to each his or her own.  Fenders work for me.

Pliers? What's wrong with a strip torn from your jersey for padding and your teeth? Toughen up.

My teeth are filled and fragile.

Actually the reason I was carrying my folding plier/tool was because it contained an excellent bottle opener.

Something I didn't get to use nearly often enough this year, unfortunately.

These days it seems like every multi tool I buy has a bottle opener. On
the bike front there is the Toppeak Alien. Corkscrews are harder to
come by, but Leatherman has a model with one. Inside blades include
pate knife and pickle fork.

I have mudguards and as it happens I do carry pliers. However, I have
never needed them to fix the mudguards. 8mm spanner, yes, many
times. Pliers, no.

One of the big problems with mudguards IMHO is the amount of fettling
they need. Fitting them on the bike again when I unpacked it was a
time consuming nuisance. Still, I suppose it's better than a wet
arse.

Another problem for PBP was that they were pretty much mashed up by
the journey there and back in a bike bag.
