Just ordered a Garmin Etrex Vista HCX. What Ram mount (both the cradle and bracket) are you using with the unit? I would like to have the GPS positioned parallel to the stem on the side of the bar closest to the rider. I am using a 26.0 bar.

Could you please tell me where you bought it and the model# if possible.

Thanks for your replies.

FWIW, I have the Garmin mount on three bikes....works like a charm
with my Vista HCX.

Me too, but mine did pop lose from the mount once, while transiting a
rumble strip (Steep decent on a major Hwy) during a brief spate of
inattention.

Here is the tip of the day which is really not mine to give but just
to pass on:
Keep the leash on the unit and attach/wind/wrap it to the bars or stem
just in case your GPS should somehow come free of the mount. I have
adopted this safety precaution and it has saved my device, TWICE!
Once as a result of the rumble strip adventure and once when I had not
'securely' secured it in the mount.

I ride a lot of pretty bad country/farm roads; bad RR Xings, rough
chip seal, sudden transition form bad pavement to bad gravel, and
potholes big enough for gators to hide in. An ounce of prevention is
worth a couple Benjamins in this case.

By the way, I owe the survival of my unit to the Yoda of GPS'ing; Mr
Nick Bull.

Thanks for the tip Nick!

corollary to TOTD: depending on the configuration of the bike/leash,
make sure that the leash is short enough to prevent the gps from
swinging between the spokes of the front wheel.

BTW, the folks at http://cycoactive.com/ (Seattle local boys) are avid
off-road cyclists and motorbikers, as well as users and suppliers of
all things GPS, and are very friendly. (no relation, just a happy
customer)

I buy my mounts from cycoactive.com

The "stock" combo kit they sell will work with a 26mm bar. If you
have the 31mm bar then you will need to get the LARGEST U BOLT they
sell (the 1.3 inch size)

You may find that the stock arm (3.5 inch) is too long... Sometimes
positing of the ball joint UNDER the handlebar (point down) will allow
you to get a better position than on top (pointing up).
