Now that winter is here and for some of us that means trainer time....
This I admit is a long shot...
Has anyone used Raspberry Pi for projects and if so what's the feasibility of designing a bridge between a USB serial port and the ANT+ wireless protocol?
My motivation for this is that I just put together a smart trainer setup for someone using a CompuTrainer and TrainerRoad.
Since the CompuTrainer has a USB serial interface for communication (no wireless) this required a PC to connect the CompuTrainer to TrainerRoad (actually TrainerRoad Legacy). TrainerRoad Legacy then uses ANT+ to communicate with HRM and cadence sensors (via an ANT+ dongle on the PC).
It seems to me that if it were possible to connect wirelessly to the CompuTrainer with ANT+ through this bridge, it would make the setup so much easier. You could then run TrainerRoad on your smartphone (like I can do now with my Zwift Hub).
If the bridge supported Bluetooth then that would be even better.
There are a lot of unused CompuTrainers out there that could be put back in service as smart trainers. Requiring a PC as it is the case today is kind of a deal breaker.
It's even conceivable that someone has already implemented such a solution. I did find someone on the TR forum working on such a device. Also PerfPro has bridge software ($39) but it still requires a PC to run. It converts everything to ANT+.
Thanks,
