Once the PBP qualifiers are done, should one buy an airline ticket
or register first? i.e. Is there a limit on participants, and a
chance that I might get denied even though I've done the qualifying
brevets?

Hello Adrian

I heart this year the number of 90h riders (including tandem and solo
bikes) would be limited to 3000.
you may read this on the french forum dedicated to pbp:
http://parisbrestparis2007.actifforum.com/Paris-Brest-Paris-2007-c3/Infos-en-vrac-f15/Depart-des-90-heures-limite-a-3000-personnes-t505.htm

Here, in france, we don't need to know the registration number for the
600k , just the name of the organizer club should be OK

I think you have to register online on monday 11th and buy your
airline ticket after, unless you are a strong rider, in this case, you
will be able to choose between 80h or 84h !

Otherwise for your others posts, regional train in the suburbs of
Paris accept bike without a box if you take the train during free
hours and not during the hours where people go to work.

See you in Paris ?

I hope that there is more leeway in this. This is the first I've
heard of a limit. It would be ashamed to have gone this far only to
find out you didn't submit your application in time. Meanwhile, just
more anxiety while I wait for the April 400K results to be processed!
Seems you can turn in the date time of organizing club for the 600K
but I see no place for this with the 400K.

I wonder if and how this would affect RUSA members.  We cannot use the online registration and must mail registrations into RUSA where they are accumulated and sent as 1 mass registration.  If there is a limit, is there any consideration for when the application was received by RUSA?

Steve (who sent his registration in today)

The limit is 3000 riders for the 90 hour group. That's more than
there were candidates for the 90 hour group 4 years ago. According to
the ACP dispatches on the French forum, first preference is given to
foreigners, then to FFCT members and only then to members of other
French federations and non aligned French cyclists. So those who have
to fear are the French who are not FFCT members.

I think there have been theoretical limits to numbers in the past.
Feedback we had was that the ACP were unlikely to limit the number
overseas participants in the first instance. Otherwise there could be
some very grumpy kangaroos! The economics of getting to France from
Australia make it very attractive to purchase tickets before you even
have your qualification completed. Current prices (a week after
qualification period here finishes) are about A$1000 more than the
cheapest fares which were available earlier in the year.

Three times my strategy has been book the ticket!

Cheers,
Peter
