Grimm Fairy Tales is a dark fantasy comic book series by Zenescope Entertainment that presents classic fairy tales, albeit with modern twists or expanded plots. It began publication in June 2005.
Each issue of Grimm Fairy Tales has two parts: a frame story and a fairy tale. The frame story revolves around Dr. Sela Mathers, a Professor of Literature with the supernatural ability to help people to avoid bad life decisions by subjecting them to visions, in which they see themselves as the protagonists of allegorical fairy tales. As the series progresses, she struggles with the fact that several people ignore her lessons and ruin their lives anyway, and begins using her ability to dispense justice instead (see issue #15 "The Three Little Pigs"). Sela's nemesis is Belinda, who has the same ability as Sela but uses it for evil.
The other portion of the story is a twisted version of a classic fairy tale. The fairy tales are often violent and usually end in depressing ways, warning the readers to change their lives or suffer a similar (or sometimes worse) fate.
It is later revealed that Belinda is working for the Dark One, a Satan-like demon who is seeking to conquer not only Earth but four other worlds which the fairy tales come from. The worlds include Wonderland, Oz, Neverland, and Myst. The series gradually begins to revolve around Sela herself, as she discovers that she has become a major player in an ancient war between the Dark Horde, led by the Dark One and his allies, and the Guardians, leaders of the worlds the Dark One seeks to conquer. Already Wonderland and Neverland have fallen and are now ruled by the Dark One's allies, the monstrous Jabberwocky and the soul-devouring immortal Pan, respectively.
As someone who's a real sucker for dark retellings and unique twists of classic fairy tales, like Christina Henry's Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook, Alice, Red Queen, American McGee's Alice and Alice: Madness Returns, and Disney's Twisted Series, as well as the TV Series Once Upon a Time, I hear that there's a comic book series that also uses this concept by taking well known fairy tales and twisting them into more darker and grittier versions of themselves.
lately I've been hearing from people that they like Grimm's tales. Do not understand why? I just hate this comic. I read 12 issues of the first volume and could no longer. nothing but fucking big boobs. and the drawing in the comic is like a cheap porn comic. there is not a drop of originality. in each issue some kind of girl who has problems and she receives from a mysterious person a book in which "a real version of everyone's favorite fairy tales" is told. and the main heroines always poke their boobs right into the frame on almost every comic strip, something sexy happens. in the end she dies and we learn the lesson. now it has not changed much. the creators just decided to make more action (the horror genre has become much less), but the essence has not changed. people choose this series as an alternative (they especially love endless spinoffs) and they like the plot. It resembles a blogger. damn any comic "image" and get the same blockbuster just made better. Let's conclude in this comic there is nothing original and interesting except for boobs. if you want to look at boobs in comics then this comic is for you
Grimm Fairy Tales is a comic book series by Zenescope Entertainment inspired by the stories of The Brothers Grimm and other classic literature. Each issue is a frame story in which someone with a problem meets one of two women, Sela or her evil nemesis Belinda. They will be given a book containing an "original" fairy tale, much darker in tone than traditional fairy tales, that mirrors their situation. In the end, one of three things will happen: the person will see the error of their ways and change, the person will fail to see the error of their ways and fall victim to some unfortunate circumstances, or they will fail to see the error of their ways and supernatural forces from the story will act directly to punish them. The series is typically very over-the-top, although this does not stop it from being entertaining by any means.
A series which aims to tell updated fairy tale stories, often with an added touch of horror to them. They are generally told as something of a parable to the modern conditions of rotating character. The stories are usually narrated by either Belinda or Sela. The two control two books of fairy tales and they are generally used to either help or hinder those listening to them. Over the course of the series the fairy tales get used in different ways, for instance the two narrators can control the characters in magical worlds, modern characters outside of the fairy tales become fairy tale characters, or the two narrators live through the fairy tales themselves to examine their actions. The series is also notable for its generally misleading covers, as they often contain revealing pictures of the female characters, the characters in the stories themselves are generally portrayed in a more respectable manner. The series is also noted for some of its variant covers which are not fairy tales representations, but mythical or legendary ones such as Cleopatra or Rosie the Riveter.
