Rancho Gordo Retail,
I received this email about bean buddies, but I am not listed in the body of the email as someone receiving the bean trials.  I received the bean donations for Dingle Elementary, but there was nothing about the bean trials in that box.  I am happy to provide feedback about the donations, but I it appears as if the bean buddy trials are something different.  I just wanted to let you know.  I am still happy to participate in whatever fashion works for you!

Whoops. I somehow missed something. I thought if we had been a buddy of beans over the last few years and commented on our results we would continue to be one. Apparently we needed to re-up this year? Phina Borgeson

Hello Bean Buddies,

We wanted to let you know that all of the envelopes have been shipped out today, so they should be arriving on the following days. We sent five different types, and some of them were picked by Steve. It would be great if you could provide any feedback specially letting us know if it's a pole or bush a bean. We appreciate all the effort that you put into this project. The beans that we sent are the following ones:

-Azufrado (Phaseolus vulgaris): Originally from the beautiful state of Nayarit in Mexico. The Azufrado isn’t perfectly round and it has an almost green tint when raw.
-Flageolet (Phaseolus vulgaris): A French-bred greenish-white bean. A perennial bestseller for us and clearly a staff favorite.
-Calypso (Phaseolus vulgaris): A black and white bean also known as Orca, or Yin and Yang.
-Tiger's Eye (Phaseolus vulgaris): An orange bean, with incredible markings that are tiger-like.
-Boom Bean: Steve picked this bean. We don't have much information about it, so any feedback would be appreciated.

Good luck to everyone and happy planting!

Hi!  I've got my beans and I'm ready to start them in egg cartons.  Three quick questions:

1.  Which are indeterminate and which are determinate?
2.  Do I soak the beans in water before planting and if so, how long?
3.  There was a users' group site but I've lost the thread to it; can you refresh my memory?

Many thanks,

Dave Carradini

Hello David,

Since we sell our beans mainly for cooking we don't have much information about growing the beans. Which is why we created this group to give others an opportunity to grow our beans where you can give us any feedback as to how the beans turned out. Whether they are bush or pole and you can even send pictures. That way it can be helpful for us as well. If you would like to soak the beans you can but I'd suggest not to because it can take longer for the beans to grow.

Best,
Retail Advocate

Hi Retail Advocate,

Got it!   There is a google users’ group, I think, but I don’t have access to it.  Can you refresh my memory as to how to find it?

Many thanks,

Hi Mary!  Excellent video.

I’m looking to plant the Three Sisters this year and wonder if anyone here has done that?

I’m wondering too whether to plant them all at the same time or to do it in phases, as CaliKim suggests (I’ve known other gardeners to do so).

The trick for the Three Sisters is knowing which beans are determinate and which are not.  I’m planning on doing some Internet research and will post what I find.

Baker Seed Catalogue has some incredible varieties of corn and squash for the project, if anyone else is interested.

If anyone has some tips on deer-proofing without fencing I am all ears:  my smallish back yard abuts a twenty-acre stand of wood and we have both female and bachelor herds back there.

There’s also a users’ group somewhere in google and I don’t recall how to get there.  Would be grateful for whatever pointers can be offered.

Happy growing!

Dave

I just planted my bean trials last night.  I live in zone 9, so a bit on the late side for me for beans, but I only planted 5 of each so I can save a few for the fall to see if they do better then.
I did a bit of quick research on them before I planted and it looks like the Flageolet, Calypso, and Tiger's Eye are bush beans.  I think the Azufrado are also bush type, but just to be sure I planted them by the trellis.  I couldn't find anything on the Boon beans, so I also planted those by the trellis.
My daughter (6) had a great time helping me plant the beans in the garden she and DH had created for my birthday surprise - we are both beginner gardeners.  She kept saying the Calypso should be called Zebra beans and really loved the look of the Tiger's Eye.  Thanks for letting me participate this year and thanks for helping to create fun memories.

How's everyone else doing?

The Bean Buddies

We just planted ours 4/22 and they seem pretty happy so far! We're in San Jose so the weather has been cooperative. The Azufredo are a little slow to the start, hopefully they'll perk up. We added Cassoulet because we love them :) but that was from our own stash of R.G. beans. My daughter helped and made the signage, these were the first thing to go into the new garden beds we are building.

Cheers!

So far, not much to report.  I had good germination - of 25 beans planted, 21 sprouted.  I'm growing in a raised bed and it's been very hot since planting.  I'm trying to water regularly, but they are not growing well.  I think the Boon beans may be runner as it looks like they are reaching out for the trellis, but it may be still too early to tell.

Boon are definitely runners, I have a few really climbing now.  Only one of my Azufrados made it...we had two straight weeks of cooler rain and all but one rotted in the ground.  Squirrels have been my biggest challenge and they seem to particularly love Flageolet and Calypso.  While several have been chewed down, I've been amazed that at least 60-70% of the eaten seedlings are re-sprouting leaves.

My boon beans are on stakes now. They're definitely runners. The rest don't seem to be needing any help.

Anyone else have problems with Azufrado? They took the longest to come up. I had taken them to be a loss until about a week ago.

The late rain and heat waves coming and going in the SF Bay Area are not doing my crop any favors so far.

The Azufrado beans also gave me problems - most of the beans rotted in seed starter trays. The lone survivor is thriving in a sunny location in the ground. Azufrado/Peruano beans are my favorite substitute for Pinto beans, so I'm hopeful to get a decent seed supply this season for future planting.

Boon beans are also runners and doing great sharing the trellis and bamboo poles with my Scarlett runner beans.

Are any of you guys eating these as green beans or is everyone saving
them for the dried beans?

I had only one of the Azufrados sowed that is still alive and that one is is very late in forming the next leaves. Seems stuck. May have needed more warmth than when I sowed them and put them out in the garden. Zone 8. Had some good warmth then temps plummeted for most of April. The seedlings looked deformed or diseased.

I only planted the Boon, Calypso and Tiger Eye [all I had room for]. They all had pretty good germination. The Boon is a pole bean for sure, but the other two are looking like bush beans. I planted them May 10 and was worried about the next cold wet spell here in Napa. But they did OK - the recent hot spell crisped a few leaf edges, but the plants seem strong and thriving. I generally save these as dry beans rather that green,

I harvested my calypso beans today.  I only have 23 beans, but that should be good to try them again next year.  They were a bush bean.  Anybody else harvesting beans yet?

We had a very late start in Chicago - a cold wet spring and now a big hot and dry stretch.  I planted all the seeds from all 5 kinds on May 23.  They are packed very tightly but for now I can still tell what's what.  It may get harder as they grow.  Calypso and Boon are pole beans, the other 3 are bush.  All are flourishing and at least 3 kinds have formed beans.  I'll leave them all and pick them once they are dry.   My other green beans in a different bed are under mild attack by a few Japanese beetles, but they have not noticed these.

Hi RG Bean Buddies!

I have just started to harvest some of the beans that have dried.  We are in the 100s all week so they dried fairly quickly. I have a few Calypso beans from this year and I actually planted the rest of my RG beans from last year as well so I cheated a little. I have a total of 9 ounces of shelled beans so far.  Tigers Eye should have a few pods ready in a week or two.

Any luck with your beans?

I'm having a horrible season. The temps have not been stable at all this summer. The beans came up late, then I had trouble keeping the moisture in the soil consistent because we got heat waves and then the temps crashed. As I'm typing we're going through a second wave of abnormal humidity. All my beans are pretty yellow now and there are barely any beans. Maybe one or two pods per plant. Not sure if I should just throw my hands up, stop watering, and let them dry out.

I have one bean plant left of the 21 that sprouted.  It has been too hot here in the raised bed.  They all tried to hold on - they would sprout a few leaves if we had rain a few days in a row, but even with me consistently watering they didn't do anything more than that.  I wasn't able to water for three days in a row and now there's only one that still has green on it.  I'm in zone 9, so I'm going to work on working some compost into the bed and prep it for planting again in another month and see if it gets better once the weather cools down.

I'm so jealous of you that are harvesting beans!

Yes, the boon beans that I had were trying to climb but they just didn't make it.  I don't remember right off which color they were, but I think the were cream.

Hi, My bean trials are over and I have to say that I failed! I researched the beans and made some assumptions as to wether they were bush beans or pole beans. I have a very small garden and everything has to be plotted out. Well, the beans I thought were pole ended up acting like bush and vice versa. So the beans in pole locations suffocated behind taller plants and those in bush bean positions started to try to climb and ended up stunted up with no where to go. The Azufrado was the least performing bean as only two germinated, one survivor, died somewhere soon after. The best performing bean was Tiger's Eye! probably got a cup or two from just a few beans. Calypso was the next best performer and did as well. Both were bush and they survived fairly well because I harvested some things in front and I kept them in the sun.
Flageolet did as well as can be expected and survived behind other plants, a good try. Boon did ok but I had to transplant once I realized they were pole beans and afterwards they were tiny, did not recover well from the move. Well, there you have it. Loved the exercise even if it was a bit disappointing I made the wrong assumptions. Thanks!
