 It has been a while, but I have good news! We will be starting the 2016 Bean Trials. We’ll be sending a nice variety of beans for you to grow and let us know how it goes. We will need your full name and shipping address if you wish to participate. The deadline to participate is Friday, April 15^th, 2016.

Hey Rebecca in Seattle! I'm in Seattle too and we did receive bean trial beans about 2 weeks ago. They came in a small padded tan envelope with a tiny yellow Rancho Gordo branded envelope inside. Inside the yellow envelope were 7 bean seeds, each different. There was no note or paperwork with information.  Perhaps the mystery is intended to spur bean trialers to do some sleuthing?  We compared the bean seeds with all the pics on the RG web site and determined that we received 1 each:  bayo chocolate, ayocote negro, Domingo rojo, Rio zape, rebosero, ayacote blanco, and alubia Blanca.  As a bean gardener, it is helpful for us to know a plant's growth habit (determinate, indeterminate, bush or pole) for planning, spacing and trellising.  We could only find out the probable growth habit of 4 of the beans we were sent after about an hour on the internet.  The Rio Zape are likely bush and the Negro, Blanco, and Blanca are likely pole. As for rebosero, rojo, and chocolate we will see in about 45 days what happens.  All 7 of our Gordo Bean Trial beans were planted 2 days ago along with 29 other Bean seeds (cassoulet, Moro, good motherstallard, eye of the goat, sangre de Toro and snow cap).   We would love to hear what others received and are growing.  Happy planting all!

PS.  Rebecca, we have plenty extra eye of the goat, good mother stallard, snow cap and sangre de Toro Bean seeds if you would like some we could meet locally for a seed exchange. We're in the Georgetown neighborhood.  - Jesse and Patty

Thanks for all of the info! I don't know why mine didn't make it. Ah well. Of the three years I've "participated" I've only received beans once after a re-send. Maybe the local machines eat the lumpy envelopes. :) 

If it works out, I'd love to plant eye of the goat and good mother stallard. I'm in NE Seattle, so the other end of things from you, but I could certainly meet near you.

Hello Rebecca, I double checked our Bean Buddies list and we actually sent yours too. If you don't get them this week please let me kmow and I can send you another envelope. Regarding the information, we posted a description of what beans you guys were getting. We will actually try to post further information. We will also ship more than 1 seed of each time. It was our first time doing this since our other co workers aren't working here anymore. We apologize for that.
