Hi Everyone,

So far we have ~6 organizations being represented this weekend. While this is less than the original 12 members at our first summit, I'm willing to move forward with the event and finalize the agenda with those interested in attending. If there is interest in another event next month or later in the summer, I think using Doodle would be the way to go to organize it.

As for an agenda, the topics of discussion are still open.

I suggested earlier that we discuss the value of partnerships with local start-ups and other commercial entities (full disclosure, Dovercourt Park is considering partnerships with AutoShare and Cultivate TO, as well as Projexity) and I've heard from other associations that many are being approached as of late with similar offers of partnerships, as well as offers to work with graduate students, etc.

Additionally, other topics like using technology as an engagement tool, creating clear mission statements, and improving outreach to local neighbourhood members have all been brought up.

any thoughts on what we'd like to discuss?

OK, I hope this isn't too far out in left field.

The value of an association of grass roots associations ( RA's ) is to gripe!

This has huge value because we get to share neighbourhood critical issues across Ward boundaries.

These issues, through consensus, can then become targeted issues.

For example in our downtown neighbourhood, by my estimation, slumlords have purchased one half of our R3 Zoned housing stock ( total 625 ) and have filled those houses with as many post secondary students as they physically ( not legally ) can hold.

This has removed any chance of these houses becoming normal rental apartments hence further declining our active residential base.

It also has meant that most of these properties have illegally paved front yards ( contained within the public boulevard ) filled with large number of permanently placed garbage bins reflecting the number of residents ) with no action from Solid Waste or Transportation ROWM.

Neither Tracey Cook, MLS head or Councillor Vaughan has been able to have any effect on this issue because it seems the legislation is based on 'shifting sands' even though the 'spirit' of the rooming house by-law is clear. Only 4 licensed rooming houses out of 300 presently.

Meanwhile, even though every effort has been made on our part the neighbourhood is hanging on by it's nails while the slumlords blockbust us and the City looks on perhaps in amazement.

The large scale support we need is difficult to generate but without that support and controversy we can't hope to generate new legislation that would require a licence ( and hence access for inspection ) of every residential house that provides housing to the public whether is be a luxury flat or 20 students packed into basements and attics of a 100 year old house.

This is the solution that Vancouver has used to remarkable effect.

The secret to adoption of a sweeping by-law like this is a promise of fairness.

Councillor Leyton already supports this idea.

Any comments? Is this a worthy topic?

Nick,

I think the topic at the root of the idea - how do we build cross community connections to address systemic issues - is incredibly valueable. I'd be willing to put it on the agenda!

Draft Agenda:

1:00 - 1:10 Welcome and Introductions (and any amendments to the agenda)
1:10 - 2:00: discussion on the value of partnerships
BREAK
2:10 - 3:00: Discussion on building inter-RANACA connections.

I've booked the meeting room at CSI Annex 720 Bathurst St., Meeting room #4 on the 3rd floor. My partner graciously secured the location under her name, if you get lost say your here for Melanie Wood's meeting. (please don't get lost).

See you there!

Sorry we can’t be there as this is something near and dear to us.

BTW, how many associations took a position on Billy Bishop?  We took a very aggressive one and are pleased with the outcome so far.

More detailed instructions:

When you arrive, enter the northern entrance of 720 Bathurst, and go up the stairs or take the elevator to the 3rd floor. Meeting room 4 is just on the other side of the door you'll see in the stairwell.

There is a help desk or coffee shop on the ground floor that can give directions to room 4 if you have trouble.

Enjoy!
