Fairy lights are tiny LED lights. They come in a number of different colors and can be picked up for cheap ($10 or thereabouts) on Amazon.com. I prefer to use warm white colored fairy lights, but feel free to experiment. Different colors will give your photographs different tones.
If your subject is shaded, or if the day is cloudy, you can start shooting a few minutes before the sun has gone down. As the level of ambient light decreases, the overall look offered by the fairy lights will change.
The lens aperture is the easiest setting to choose, widen it as much as possible. Not only does this let in the most light (to compensate for the lack of ambient lighting), but it also blurs the fairy lights in a more pleasing way.
As for shutter speed, I meter off the main subject (for me, this is usually a flower), and then deliberately underexpose the image. Why? I like that blue twilight aesthetic and I want it to be clear that the image was taken after sundown. This also really causes the fairy lights to stand out.
Regarding lenses, I usually shoot with a macro lens. However, you might also work with another fast lens, such as a 50mm f/1.8. These have the added benefit of being smaller and are therefore easier to handhold.
Instead, compose so that the fairy lights complement the main subject. Place them so that they appear above the subject (in the background). Make them appear beside the subject. Put them so that they seem to ring the main subject.
If all goes well, you might find yourself inspired to experiment with different colored fairy lights, or even take them with you when engaging in other genres of photography like portrait or pet photography.
Anne provided my husband and I with such an amazing experience for both our maternity session and our newborn session. She was so great with our son and amazingly was able to work around the fact that he was born a month early and had some health issues. She made us so comfortable for both sessions and was the picture of professionalism. I highly recommend her studio and I will absolutely be going back. The pictures she took for us are absolutely amazing and I am so thankful that we found her!
"Wow. This place is beautiful. From the moment you walk in, you are literally standing in a fairytale. You then walk back into the photography room which is straight out of a book. So beautiful. The team is incredible with your child/children. I was nervous about not being right next to her, but they made her feel so special. She didn't even notice I wasn't next to her. I can't wait to receive my images. Thank you to Bluebird Portraits for the opportunity, but even more of a thank you for making my daughter feel confident and beautiful. By the way, the dresses they have for you to choose are insane. So beautiful."
"Wonderful experience. The staff was professional and nice. They made the process smooth and quick transitions from walk in and waiting to changing and the photograph process. The best part was how much my daughter loved it! Thank you and looking forward to seeing the pictures."
"The set was absolutely beautiful. It was nice not to have to get coordinating outfits since they provided beautiful clothing. Our photographer and the other women directed the kids kindly and professionally. Our children had a great time. The portrait came pretty quickly and is really stunning."
"Took my kids for a session and the Bluebird team was absolutely amazing with the kids! Our kids did not want to leave when it was time to leave. Even in the video after viewing the pictures the person was super helpful and patient. I would definitely recommend it to anyone with children. It is worth every second and leaves memories to last a lifetime."

Making a fairy door is a rather straightforward process. Lay popsicle sticks out to create the design you want. Cut two cross pieces to hold it all together and glue. I used a box cutter to cut the pieces. You probably can get away with a good pair of scissors.
You could EASILY glue a stick, piece of wire, or another popsicle stick to the back, protruding out the bottom so that you can just stick it in the dirt. And that would have been just fine. But I was on a roll and wanted to go the extra mile.
Well, it took me longer than I thought, but here is the completed picture of the baby fairy. This stage was just completing all the grass and flowers that surround the baby and also, the colorful sky. I think it is just enough. I feel like I should have something more in the background, but I wanted to leave space for wording/text.
I am already working on another picture. This is a little different from what I am used to drawing though. This picture has a little more meaning to it as it is of a homeless woman and a little girl at Christmas. I will show you when I am done.
This image shows groups of fairy circles near the town of Moora, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) north of Perth. It was acquired by the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) on Landsat 9 on June 27, 2023. In this area, groups of round depressions are found along the north-south-trending Darling Fault. Sometimes called salt lakes, the features seen here are several hundred meters in diameter, and the amount of vegetation and water contained in their interiors changes over time.
Historically, hydrogen reservoirs have tended to be discovered by accident. In one example, well diggers in Mali in the late 1980s tapped into what was later determined to be a highly concentrated store of natural hydrogen. Now, satellite imagery readily reveals fairy circles that might be investigated as potential seeps. Other semi-circular to circular surface features with high concentrations of hydrogen in their soil have been documented around the world, from Brazil to Russia to the U.S. state of North Carolina. Experts suspect that there are many more natural sources of hydrogen to be found, given the proper tools and the will to look.
In Australia and beyond, interest in hydrogen as a zero-emission fuel is growing. Currently, commercial hydrogen must be produced using energy-intensive processes such as separating water into hydrogen and oxygen with an electric current, or isolating hydrogen from fossil fuel feedstocks. Some argue that natural sources offer a viable alternative. However, much remains to be learned about how and where hydrogen forms beneath the surface, and how best to extract and store it.
In case you are unfamiliar with Fairy Stones, there is a legend, and these unique "stones" are rare and only found in a few places across the globe. They are plentiful in Patrick County, and if you have time and patience to do a proper hunt, you will find some. They are considered good luck pieces, and it is rumored that presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson and other historical figures carried them for this purpose. Local artisans clean them up and file them to make jewelry pieces.
It is said that long, long ago, fairies inhabited a specific quiet and remote region in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The fairies roamed freely, enjoying the beauty and serenity of that enchanted place..
One day, the fairies were playing in a sunny glade when an elfin messenger arrived from a faraway city bearing the sad news of Christ's death. When they heard the terrible details of the crucifixion, they wept. As their tears fell to the earth, they crystallized into little stone crosses. Though the fairies have long since disappeared, the little stone crosses, known as "fairy stones," remain as mementos in that enchanted spot.
Formed and found within the park's boundary, these stone crosses are composed of iron, aluminum and silicate. The name of this mineral compound is staurolite, and like many other minerals, the staurolite formed in regular crystals. Single crystals are hexagonal or six-sided, and singles often intersect at right angles to form the Roman or Maltese shape. In other instances, the singles intersect at forty-five-degree angles to form St. Andrews crosses.
The formation of the staurolite crystals involved an exact combination of heat and pressure provided by the folding and crumpling of the earth's crust during the formation of the Appalachian Mountains. During the crystals' formation, mineral deposits surrounding the crystals were also subjected to the same conditions and formed what is known as schist. The staurolite crystals are usually harder than the surrounding schist and less easily weathered. As the staurolite-bearing schist is weathered away, the more resistant crystals are uncovered and are found exposed at the earth's surface. Occasionally staurolite can be found still embedded in its schist matrix.
