The term appliqué is derived from French and Latin verbs appliquer and applicare, respectively, which both mean to join or attach. Like embroidery, it has a humble beginning. The technique was used as a way to strengthen worn areas of items or to patch holes that had formed. Early appliqué was used to lengthen the life of clothing and moved into artful techniques that can be seen in blankets and quilts from numerous cultures from all over the world.
There are folk traditions to embellish garments with leather appliqué in Scandinavia, Russia and Eastern Europe, and leather appliqué is also found in Gujarat, India, Pakistan and Morocco where men's clothing and leather slippers are decorated with embroidery and leather appliqué. Felt appliqué is used to add embellishments to women's aprons in Eastern Europe and decorative uses of felt appliqué are also seen among the nomadic tribes of Central Asia to decorate yurts, floor covering and bags.Reverse applique is used on the Mola textiles of South America.
Step 1: Prepare your background fabric for applique. This is sort of like your canvas. It can be one solid piece of fabric or a pieced background using multiple fabrics.
Step 8: Fuse the applique shape onto the background fabric. You will need to remove the release paper from your applique shape first. Position the shape onto your background fabric. (It may be helpful to find the center of your background fabric first by folding it in half and making a crease along the center.) Press the applique with a hot iron. Again, check the instructions for your particular fusible product. For HeatnBond Lite, you will press for 8-10 seconds, no steam.
Step 9: Stitch the applique in place. This is a very important step. Guess how I know? My first applique projects are now starting to fall apart because I skipped this part. ?
Julie, very detailed tutorial, Thank You! Sewing for over 40 years but new to quilting this past winter and totally addicted! A project I MUST make includes applique so I found your tut! I cant wait to dive in and practice the technique! I have a bazillion stitches on my new Viking 975Q so the opportunities are mind boggling!
Knot one end and pull through the back right at the crease. Use a running applique stitch to sew peel/petal to the backing fabric. (This video demonstrates how to do a hand applique stitch.)
Lori, thank you for showing this method of hand appliqueing. Years and years ago, when I was in my youth :) - a church member wanted to make a quilt for all who were in the youth group. Our mothers had to hand applique - in my case the petals and tulip heads - the chosen designs and then this member hand quilted all the quilts. Though I knew how much work was involved - each time I'm still amazed at the hours of work and love that was poured into these quilts. After your tutorial, I just might have to sit down and do some hand appliqueing and walk a while in the shoes that walked before me!!
As an homage to our aquatic neighbors, I whipped up this Kraken... Octopus... Squid (well, whichever you want it to be) applique. Perfect for purses, cute on kid's clothes, the applications for this applique are endless! Jaunty, nautical, and sweet, you can rest assured that this Kraken is only looking for hugs, not sailor snacks.
Row 10: Ch1 and turn. Sc2tog, sc2tog. (2sc) Break yarn and finish off. Weave in ends. (TIP: Decide which side will be the RS, and which side will be the WS. After weaving in ends, leave ends hanging off the WS. These can be used for sewing on the applique later, and help indicate RS/WS while making the tentacles!)
#8: Ch15 and sl st in 2nd st from hook. Sl st in remaining sts to base. Break yarn and sew to the same (body) st. Weave in ends or use them to sew the applique onto your project later.

The fusible side of the interfacing is on the back of the circle. Use a hot iron to lightly press the circle into place. Please note, sometimes through handling the fuse comes loose so we also pinned our circle to the backing fabric to keep it from shifting around during the applique process.
I needed a new throw pillow for my fall home decor. Thereupon, I decided to create a DIY pumpkin applique pillow and then sew a throw pillow cover with it. I used linen fabric available here for the pillow cover and added the pumpkin applique in the black and white check. The pretty yellow bench the pillows are sitting on we made a few months ago and the tutorial you can see here.
Making a pumpkin applique uses the same techniques as any applique, with attention to the particular design is the only difference. I started my applique by drawing the pumpkin on a piece of regular paper, then taped it up on the kitchen window with the Wonder Under over it and traced the pumpkin on the paper side of the Wonder Under.
Before you tune out on me and start watching old episodes of Sesame Street because you think this sounds too hard, hear me out: all of these were firsts for me! From cutting the fabric with my machine to sewing an applique. And I consider myself a beginner sewist. So, you can totally do this thang.
Step 1. Create your design in Silhouette Studio. If this is your first applique project, go simpler than you think you need to. I thought my initial duck image was simple, but I ended up simplifying it even further, trimming off the extra head and tail fluff. (Sorry, ducky.)
Step 5. Practice your applique skeelz. For those of you who have never before tried sewing on a fabric applique, I highly recommend getting in some practice first. So, take some of the excess fabric that you weeded from your cut design, iron it onto a scrap of material, and remove any storage compartment on the front of your machine if you can (for more maneuverability) . Then, set your machine to a zig-zag stitch, and practice! Play around with stitch length and width to see what your eye prefers. Get a sense for how to work around curves. Make mistakes. (Lots of them.)
Step 6. Sew your applique. Now, I am far from an expert at sewing an applique. All I know is that my ducky will not be falling off my onesie any time soon. But here are a few tips I might offer to a fellow beginner (and experts, feel free to weigh in down below in the comments with your sage wisdom).
Step 7. Finishing touches! I read at Sew Like My Mom that rather than backstitching to knot your thread, you should use a seam ripper or needle to pull your top threads to the back of the fabric, and tie everything together back there by hand. It makes for a prettier finished product. Then, you can press your applique one final time to give it that professional look.
I know this is a very old post, but I have been searching for tips to perfect my technique. I have started using applique with onesies and find that I need a stabilizer. I very much dislike tearing the paper away (pieces get stuck in my blanket stitch) and do not want to add any additional stiffness by using something permanent. I notice on your tutorial you did not have a stabilizer step. Is this something that you do and if so what type do you use? When I experimented with not using any, I practically shredded the onesie fabric. Thank you for your time! Love your design!
