Hey Rakevet,

As one of my goals to enhance Rakevet’s awareness of current events in Israel, I will be sending out e-mails approximately twice a week with regard to current events in Israel.  There will be links at the bottom of each e-mail with a couple of websites that are Israeli newspapers in English.  I hope you enjoy these updates and read the websites.  Besides this, one word will be included at the end of each e-mail in Hebrew.  Think of it as Rakevet’s Hebrew word of the day.  Israel is an important part of our lives as American Jews.  We should NEVER forget our connection to Israel-our homeland.  Feel free to e-mail me anytime with questions about Israel, I will be happy to help.

RAKEVET’s Israel News Update
Hamas, the terrorist organization that is running West Bank and Gaza announced on June 9th, that it would resume attacking Israel.  This violates the intermittent 16 month old cease-fire.  The announcement came after at least seven Palestinian civilians died on a crowded beach in Gaza from a wayward Israeli artillery shell.  The Israeli government expressed regret and concern got the deaths saying that it was accidental and that the shells were aimed at a target 400 yards away.

In the past couple of weeks organizations in England and Canada have made headlines by boycotting the State of Israel.  NAFHE, the British college lecturers union decided to boycott Israel’s education and research developments.  The boycott was followed closely by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) in Ontario.  The two motions were passed with provisions that included; support for the right of return of 1948 refugees and their descendants to within Israel’s borders.
