I am very fixed in my workflow and really don't want to run more software than I need to. I was keen when I heard that 1Password would be offering an SSH agent, but dismayed when I installed it and saw that it doesn't provide a pageant-alike agent - I guess it's based on OpenSSH code, and fair enough that makes sense.

Someone in another topic mentioned using winssh-pageant to bridge the two sides together, but I don't really want to add another piece of code in the path to make use of it. I only use Putty and Filezilla on my Windows machine, so I'd get zero benefit from having an openssh-agent available on the machine.

The genuine pageant.exe file is a software component of PuTTY by Braindonors.net.
Pageant is a secure shell (ssh) tunneling method for connecting to Unix or Linux machines via PuTTY. PuTTY is terminal emulator that has the ability to utilize several protocols and includes the ability to transfer files.

The .exe extension on a filename indicates an executable file. Executable files may, in some cases, harm your computer. Therefore, please read below to decide for yourself whether the pageant.exe on your computer is a Trojan that you should remove, or whether it is a file belonging to the Windows operating system or to a trusted application.

The file size is 290,704 bytes (25% of all occurrences), 154,536 bytes, 269,128 bytes or 152,520 bytes. The file is not a Windows core file. The program has no visible window. The file is digitally signed.

Important: Some malware camouflages itself as pageant.exe. Therefore, you should check the pageant.exe process on your PC to see if it is a threat. We recommend Security Task Manager for verifying your computer's security. This was one of the Top Download Picks of The Washington Post and PC World.

A clean and tidy computer is the key requirement for avoiding problems with pageant. This means running a scan for malware, cleaning your hard drive using 1cleanmgr and 2sfc /scannow, 3uninstalling programs that you no longer need, checking for Autostart programs (using 4msconfig) and enabling Windows' 5Automatic Update. Always remember to perform periodic backups, or at least to set restore points.

To help you analyze the pageant.exe process on your computer, the following programs have proven to be helpful: ASecurity Task Manager displays all running Windows tasks, including embedded hidden processes, such as keyboard and browser monitoring or Autostart entries. A unique security risk rating indicates the likelihood of the process being potential spyware, malware or a Trojan. BMalwarebytes Anti-Malware detects and removes sleeping spyware, adware, Trojans, keyloggers, malware and trackers from your hard drive.

Target: "C:\Program Files\PuTTY\pageant.exe" C:\Documents and Settings\myaccount\My Documents\myKeys\key1.ppk C:\Documents and Settings\myaccount\My Documents\myKeys\key2.ppk C:\Documents and Settings\myaccount\My Documents\myKeys\key3.ppk

Apparantly he got access to a machine on which the user used pageant to manage ssh keys and authenticate to servers without having to type his key password every single time he connects. This of course raises the following interesting (or silly) question:

Nice seems we are getting back to the first structures we found in the src, since this is the ssh2_userkey structure which holds the decrypted data, thus confirming this indeed is the tree that holds all the decrypted private keys. To fully confirm it we could look up the comment pointer which should contain the comment for the key that I loaded into pageant:

On the left the key extracted from memory and imported into puttygen, like you can see it has no passphrase. On the right the original key that I imported into pageant, you might recognise the comment from earlier screenshots, when I started to write this blog post.

Like you can imagine there is a lot more to be extracted from the process memory dump of pageant since it contains two more interesting trees, one for other type of keys and one for short-term passwords. So if you want a nice exercise you should definitely play with it, since having the source code really is a big advantage.

Ive always used windows in my life, and about router, I used ssh putty with pageant to save my rsa keys to login automaticaly but now Im on ubuntu, I installed putty but cant find pageant to save my keys?
idea??
thanks

thanks for your replies, but I prefer putty and I installed it but when IM connecting it always asks me my ''passphrase'' as I said, usualy, my keys are in '' putty pageant'' so the authentification is ''auto''.
btw, I tried the ubuntu terminal to connect to router but I m not using ''port 22'' on my routers, and the terminal is on ''port 22'' and dont know to change it, ? when I try sudo vim /etc/ssh/sshd_config or or with nano, there is nothing in it, neither here /etc/ssh/sshd_config
thanks

Just follow the installation process. It should be fairly self-explanatory. If the installation is successful, you should find pageant.exe, putty.exe, puttygen.exe and many other files in the C:\Program Files\PuTTY directory. If this is the case, you can proceed with creating your SSH key-pair.

Before you click Next, you have to append the path to your private SSH key. For this to work, you must enclose the pageant.exe-path in double quotes. After that, simply append the path to your private SSH key. Don't forget to enclose this path in double quotes as well. You can even add multiple SSH keys this way:

Always buy extra fabric. Matching repeats (when I have to do it) requires extra fabric. So does centering a design on a shade, or in the case of my dinette area, aligning a design horizontally across adjacent windows.

Once you have started pageant, and configured sessions, you can easily open terminals on the remote servers by right-clicking on the pageant icon, and selecting a Saved Session.

There was this miracle, of light. That special flame that we heard about in the pageant, the flame that lasted 8 days even though there was only enough oil for one. A flame to celebrate the winning of a long fight so that this group of people could be free to be who they were.
