Respected Members,
Quotes of the day;
ICAI Forensic Lab update;
1. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India is launching an advanced forensic auditing lab at its Centre of Excellence in Hyderabad within 2-3 months. This is positioned as a major infrastructure push to give small and medium CA practices access to tools and capabilities that were previously out of reach
2. What’s Being Launched*
· Advanced Forensic Auditing Lab: To be set up at ICAI’s Centre of Excellence, Gachibowli, Hyderabad.
· Launch Timeline: Expected in the next 2-3 months, confirmed by ICAI President Prasanna Kumar D.
· Operating Model: “Pay and use” model offering assignment-specific tools. Small and medium practitioners can access high-end forensic software and hardware without huge capital investment.
3. Why It Matters for Small CA Firms*
· Problem Identified: Forensic audit is a new, tech-heavy area. Small and medium CA firms currently can’t participate in large auditing works due to lack of forensic capabilities.
· Level Playing Field: Lab aims to bridge the capability gap between SMPs and Big 4 firms who dominate forensic audits.
· Scope: ICAI has over 5 lakh members, including small and medium practitioners, who will benefit.
4. Broader ICAI Reforms Announced Alongside*
· Curriculum Revamp: ICAI is embedding AI, data analytics, and ESG disclosures into the CA curriculum to keep pace with professional changes.
· Education Review: Committee for Review of Education and Training (CRET) formed to finalize curriculum updates in coming months.
· New Courses Already Live: DAAB is upgrading DISA 3.0 to DISA 4.0 and introducing courses in Digital Forensics, DPDP, and Cybersecurity Audit. ICAI also launched Data Protection Compliance & Audit Certification at the Hyderabad CoE.
· Global Push: In Feb, ICAI notified global networking guidelines to help create large home-grown domestic CA firms that can collaborate with global networks.
5. About ICAI Centre of Excellence, Hyderabad*
· Address: ICAI Bhawan, Plot No. 10 & 11, Nanakramguda, Financial District, Gachibowli, Hyderabad - 500019.
· Existing Infra: ICAI already runs CoEs in Hyderabad and Jaipur, with 8 more planned in 3 years. The Hyderabad CoE hosts Forensic Refresher Courses, Data Protection Certification, and Digital Finance Summits.
6. The Bigger Picture*
· Govt + ICAI Alignment: Move ties into larger government efforts to build homegrown big accounting firms that can compete globally.
· Profession Shift: Accountancy is seeing major transformation with focus on non-financial reporting, ESG, AI, data analytics, and forensic auditing. ICAI has already issued 23 Forensic Accounting and Investigation Standards.
7. Bottom Line for Practitioners: If delivered, this lab gives SMPs affordable, on-demand access to forensic tech, expert tools, and training. For firms shut out of fraud investigation, insolvency, and cyber-forensic assignments, this could be the entry point to high-value work that Big 4 firms have dominated.
