Higuys! I am interested in replacing the PRS Dragons in a PRS CE-22. Could you tell me about the Crunchbox set? I can't find much info or reviews but am interested! Is it fairly versatile or super hot?

I have yet to see them in real life, but from what I've heard they are supposed to be high output, ceramic magnet pickups. If I could find a set cheap, I'd be tempted to try them out. They do look cool in the pictures.

Hey richedie. Have you given up on the BBQ/Texas combo? The Crunchbox is pretty versatile, despite the high output (slightly higher than a JB, but not quite EVO hot) It's not exactly vintage or super modern either. It is, however, quite midrangey and a little dark, like all the other Rios. So, if you're playing live with it and say, a single-coil equipped guitar, you'll most likely find yourself turning the midrange knob on your amp when you switch axes. The Crunchbox is gonna get you closer to the Mer de Noms era APC tones while the BBQ would put you more towards the new stuff. The punchbox is perfect for fat strat neck position, but if want to put it in LP, I'd think it to be a little too midrangey. Hope that helps a little.

saturdaysaviour's got it right. It is a slightly higher output pu than the JB, but not anywhere close to being a metal pu, unless you're thinking old Priest or Maiden. Keep in mind that lots of folks use the JB for metal, so even a pu with lower output than the Crunchbox can do it, and while the CB can do metal as well, it just isn't designed with that as its sole purpose. It's a very versatile pu that just so happens to have a high output.

Funny you mention APC....I have the Persuader Lead that i bought about 10 years ago. I took it off from one of my guitars and kept the pickup for a long time and haven't heard what it sounds like? I wonder?? Do you they sound similar to EMGs? Are they Ceramic or alnico?

If you want the best of both worlds go for the WCR Ironman, but don't get it unless your preamp can handle getting slammed like a lightning strike...that pup puts out more volts than some overdrives I own!

So the Crunchbox in an LP kills all else you have played? I have two LPs so I was thinking either a Shredder in one and the Rio BBQ/Texas in the other or a Crunchbox/Punchbox in one and the Rio BBQ/Texas in the other. Hmmmmm.

Anyone who has used both kick 2 and punchbox have a preference? I am looking for a plugin to help simplify my sample layering and sub creation (pitched sine or what have you) when I am making a kick on the computer.

I use kick2, it has 3 sample click layers + eq + compreasor, pitchbend, you actually have to experiment quiete a bit, but it can make anything from house to techno, Dubstep kicks one of the best purchases ever. I put that sample then in OT, MPC or Rytm for further processing, its also good for more harmonic kicks, that you use at ghost notes, or just to create sub samples you layrer. I make extra click layers from analog synth to feed it. Buy it!

Kick2 for your easy to get kicks that can also do other sounds with a little work.

Punchbox is capable of making a wide assortment of drum sounds a little easier.

Downside with Punch Box is its really easy to go off course when trying to get a straight forward kick. So for straight kicks I use Kick2.

For the slightly off the beaten path stuff, I use Punch box.

You could easily make a whole song using sounds you got off of Punchbox.
