Found the solution to jamming filament spools (AND extruder jams): the filament spools are wound too tight, which causes the spool discs to spread slightly and therefore rub or jam on the printer (MakerBot 5th Gen). I even encountered this problem on factory-wound spools - some would fit, and some would jam. If a spool is jamming, re-spool it looser. This solved every jam. The over-wound spool problem was also the source of my "extruder problem": the over-wound, widened spools rubbed on the printer housing, creating too much filament travel resistance, causing the extruder mechanism to start skipping. The extruder was fine: using properly loosely wound spools instantly fixed the extruder skipping. Again, all the problems arose from the spools being wound too tightly, causing the spool flanges to spread out and rub or jam. Happy printing!
