Theoriginal Bryce software arose from work with fractal geometry to create realistic computer images of mountain ranges and coastlines.[5] An initial set of fractal based programs were developed by Ken Musgrave (who later created MojoWorld) a student of Benot Mandelbrot, and extended by Eric Wenger. Wenger later met and worked with software artist Kai Krause to design a basic user interface. The first commercial version, Bryce 1.0, appeared in 1994 for the Macintosh.
Bryce 2.0, shipped in 1996, included much beyond the original notion of creating a realistic mountain range. These included independent light sources, complex atmospheric effects, the addition of primitive forms with Boolean methods to combine them, a revamped Texture Editor and the ability to export models to DXF.[6] Bryce 2.0 was also ported to the Windows platform, although the first stable version, 2.1, was not released until 1997.
The ability to animate a scene was added (in a stable form) with the cross-platform Bryce 3D (version 3.1) in 1997 by the newly formed MetaCreations Corporation. A "camera object" unseen in the final image acted as the observer. The camera can be held in one place for a single image, or sent on a trajectory with images being rendered at many locations. The collection of images created along the camera's trajectory are combined to create a realistic animation simulating a journey through a dynamic world.[7]
In 2000 Bryce was purchased by Corel Corporation. Corel released version 5 of Bryce in 2001, which included several new features, like Tree Lab and metaballs. Unfortunately, rendering on version 5 was much slower than version 4, and the price tag set by Corel higher.[9] Soon followed a patch to version 5.01, which fixed some bugs and added a few undocumented features.
In 2004, the software was sold again, to Daz 3D.[10] In 2005, Daz 3D released Bryce 5.5 which included the Daz Studio Character plugin. This integration between DAZ's application for the manipulation of 3D models, Daz Studio, and Bryce allowed users to import content from Daz Studio and Poser, complete with all materials including transparencies, directly into Bryce, thus making it easier to have human figures in Bryce scenes.
In October 2006, Daz 3D released Bryce 6.0 and has released an update (6.1),[11] this includes a Mac Intel compatible update. New features include animation import, support for dual-processor systems as well as hyper-threading, random replicate tool, advanced terrain editing, HDRI support and other tweaks. The interface remained largely the same, but with a green tint to it, and different buttons in the create palette.
Bryce 7 was released in July 2010. New features include the Instancing Lab and advanced lighting. Updated features include the Daz Studio Bridge, the Sky Lab, clouds and HDRI. Bryce 7 is available in three versions, a limited free version, a standard version lacking the new features and a pro version with the new features.[15] Bryce 7 is not currently compatible with OS X Lion (10.7), Mountain Lion (10.8), or Mavericks (10.9) (except for Bryce 7 Personal Limited Edition 7.1.0.74), thus the newest version of OS X it is compatible with is Snow Leopard (10.6).[16][17]
Bryce Canyon is the ultimate place to learn about and enjoy the splendor of the night sky. Far from the light pollution of civilization, protected by a special force of park rangers and volunteer astronomers, Bryce Canyon is a sanctuary for natural darkness.
The night sky at Bryce is so dark we can see thousands stars on a moonless night! Here the Milky Way extends from horizon to horizon like a vast silver rainbow. Planets glow brightly in the sky and starlight illuminates the night.
No visit to Bryce Canyon is complete without joining the Astronomy Rangers for one of their educational and entertaining celebrations of natural darkness. Check out our Ranger Programs or come in to the Visitor Center to find out when and how you can join us for an awesome astronomy experience.
On average Bryce Canyon offers about 100 astronomy programs per year, presented by our outstanding astronomy rangers and volunteers. Our skies are always beautiful, but some would say the best time to come is when the sky is darkest -- during the week of the new moon or the week prior to the new moon. Join us to celebrate the wonders of the night sky - program subjects have included the life cycles of stars, space exploration missions, the stories written in the constellations, and more!
Evening programs are sometimes followed by stargazing programs. Visit our Ranger Programs page, our online calendar, or come to the Visitor Center for more information. Programs are subject to weather and may be cancelled in the event of adverse conditions
Salt Lake Astronomical Society (SLAS) is Utah's largest league of amateur astronomers. Bryce Canyon National Park is proud to have SLAS as a long term partner in interpreting astronomy and furthering our efforts to protect natural dark skies.
Club members occasionally join us for our annual Astronomy Festival. SLAS members graciously share their personally owned telescopes and their love of the night sky. Visit their website to learn more about SLAS.
Join one of Bryce Canyon's Astronomy Rangers for a nocturnal adventure. These highly popular hikes are only offered during the full moon. Flashlights are prohibited and "lug traction" footwear is required. A limited number of tickets are available for each hike - please visit the Full Moon Hike page for details.
In the evenings, the National Park Service provides an interpretative program at the Outdoor Theater (south of the North Campground). The topic of each program is subject to change each evening. For more information, visit the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center, or NPS website for topics and program details.
Ready for a nocturnal adventure? Sign up for a full moon hike with one of the Park Rangers to explore the night sky. Flashlights and lug traction shoes are required. Children must be 8 years or older. Visit the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center enter the same day lottery ticket system.
Each year the National Park Service and their Rangers host an astronomy festival during the month of June. The festival is usually around the time of the new moon. A collection of speakers and experts attend the festival to discuss astronomy for both the science community and any guests visiting Bryce Canyon National Park.
Bryce Canyon National Park and their Park Rangers host an annual geology festival for guests. Guests can enjoy guided hikes, family friendly geology programs, and evening programs at the Visitor Center within the park.
Calling all bird watchers! Hosted by the National Audubon Society, the Christmas Bird Count is an annual tradition at Bryce Canyon National Park. Guests can become a part of one of the longest running Citizen Science surveys in the world.
Also, the separation of families at the border is not only morally reprehensible, but also it is a reproductive justice issue. Part of reproductive justice is empowering people to build families, or not, on their own terms. Separating families infringes upon that right.
Georgia State is going to offer you incredible opportunities at an affordable price. Our advocacy program is advantageous. The alumni are also incredibly supportive. I am looking to go into public service law, and an alumna sent my resume to several of her contacts. I have been overwhelmed by how supportive and eager to assist GSU Law alumni are.
Since 1977, Sojourn has been meeting the emergency and long-term needs of thousands of domestic violence survivors each year. From our early beginnings as Sojourn Services for Battered Women and Their Children, we served the families of West LA as part of the Ocean Park Community Center team. When OPCC merged with Lamp Community in 2016 to create The People Concern, we became Sojourn Domestic Violence Services, a program of The People Concern. Sojourn continues evolving to this day, adapting to the needs of our clients and survivors everywhere.
The People Concern would be honored to be a beneficiary of your will or trust. Gifts can be a percentage of the balance remaining in your estate or can be a specified amount that is factored in. By making a bequest, you can plan a gift to us that will take effect only after your other obligations are fulfilled.
Starting at the age of 71, you can direct disbursements from your IRA straight to The People Concern through a Qualified Charitable Distribution. IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions are excluded from gross income for federal income tax purposes on your IRS Form 1040, and the gift counts towards your required minimum distribution for the year in which you made the gift.
A donation of appreciated stock, mutual funds, bonds or other appreciated assets can be an effective way to maximize charitable giving. Donating stock that has appreciated for more than a year, you are actually giving 20% MORE than if you sold the stock and then made a cash donation simply by avoiding capital gains taxes.
