I've tried a few of these choices and my nickname is registered but I still can't figure out how to get #archlinux to recognize my nickname? why is it so difficult? what is the command in xchat to enable me to use xchat with my nickname which is vinoman?
If you're using X-Chat you can edit the server connection settings to automatically send your nickserv password upon connection. You won't have to run the command manually every time you connect, then.
From what I can recall, hexchat seemed like the logical successor to xchat as far as features go. The advantage of hexchat is it is still being actively maintained, or at least its list of changes appeared to be more recent. I think I looked at Debian as well, to see what they included in their out-of-the-box applications.
I tried to use xchat. My name was already in use. How can I change the nickname I use. When xchat first came up I could have changed the nickname but that screen will not come up again. I completely removed xchat and reinstalled but the name chage screen still did not come up

X-Chat is an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client for UNIX operating systems. X-Chat runs on most BSD and POSIX compliant operating systems, and works on Linux. A Windows client also exists as do several MacOS ports. A prominent fork for MacOS is X-Chat Aqua. All versions support many scripting capabilities.
Then one can use scripts that do not require a plugin at all. Of course these scripts have a very limited functionality, however, they do get simple things done very easily. Functionality is limited to irc commands plus user commands plus commands introduced by XchatPlugins.
If you're using a language other than English, you might want to have another look at the server list before you connect. XChat supports a number of character sets and encodings, and although the default, UTF-8, is a very good encoding for multilingual text. But not all IRC clients support it and for the characters that are send to appear correctly on the other people's IRC clients, they have to set the exact same encoding in their client.
Note on IRC and character encodings:There is no guarantee the characters outside ASCII will work. XChat can send and receive two types of DCC: Active mode and passive mode. Generally, active mode should be used, because it works with almost all clients, but if you're behind a very restrictive firewall, you could have to resort to using passive mode.
So you downloaded and extracted it, then loaded the .so --- but why doesn't it display any icons? As described in its README you need to set up the icon path, that is the path to the images directory. "images" is to be taken literally in this case.
Look for a directory named "images" which contains these three subdirectories: "GTKtray", "Menu" and "Win32". Right-click on the invisible icon in the system tray (notification area for gnome users), go to that setup thing and fill in the path up to and including the "images" directory we found above. Do NOT point it to GTKtray or so, this won't work; just "images" is fine. After saving your changes you need to restart xchat.
Zskn Xchatu je pro Centrum zcela nepochybně krokem, kter mu vrazně pomůže. Je zřejm, že v tomto přpadě nejde o reklamn prostor jako takov, protože chatovac servery zpravidla nejsou z tohoto pohledu prvě nejatraktivnějš. Hlavnm přnosem bude uživatelsk obec, kter bude mt možnost využvat i ostatn služby Centra. V nejbližš době bychom se ostatně měli dočkat postupn integrace Xchatu do samotnho portlu. Zajmavou informac je tak to, že Centrum m podle slov Oldřicha Bajera zjem o to, aby byly vsledky Xchatu v rmci iAuditu započtny pod Centrum.cz, tedy nikoliv jen do nějakho Centrum packu, jak je tomu zvykem u konkurenčnch portlů. Z hlediska věrohodnosti vsledků celho iAuditu se mi to nezd přliš vhodn, ale pokud by k něčemu takovm TNSM svolilo, jistě by to vrazně vylepšilo pozici Centra oproti jeho konkurentům.
V lesku včerejšho oznmen jsou však patrn i stinn strnky. Hlavnm otaznkem, kter se nad celou akvizic vznš, je vztah NetCentra a původnch vlastnků Xchatu. Při podobnch přležitostech je zvykem, že obě strany pronšej vzletn slova radosti nad tm, že se podařilo obchod uzavřt. O to podivněji proto působ skutečnost, že v cel tiskov zprvě nezaznělo řdn prohlšen zastupců druh strany, kteř ani nebyli přtomni na odpoledn tiskov konferenci. Samozřejmě jsem se snažil zskat tak jejich vyjdřen, ale odmtli mi cokoliv sdělit s odkazem na absolutn přkaz mlčenlivosti, kter jim předepisuje smlouva. Určit nesrovnalosti se tkaj tak smlouvy: podle Oldřicha Bajera z NetCentra byla smlouva uzavřena před několika dny, podle vpisu z RIPE však byla domna xchat.cz převedena na NetCentrum již v dubnu, tedy před čtyřmi měsci. Na můj dotaz, zda tedy existovala ještě nějak dřvějš smlouva, Bajer odmtl odpovědět, je to však velmi pravděpodobn: k převodu domny by jistě nedošlo bezdůvodně a bez určitch zruk pro obě strany.
Xchat bude pro Centrum nepochybně vtanm přrůstkem a jeho představitel znovu prokzali, že jim nechyb sprvny čich. Pokud by se však potvrdily spekulace o tom, že vztah obou stran nen zdaleka bezproblmov a komunikace mezi nimi probh předevšm prostřednictvm prvnch zstupců, byla by to pro Centrum nemil šmouha na jeho dosud neposkvrněnm šttu.
