Shadowhuntersis an American supernatural drama television series. The series is based on the book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, and developed for television by Ed Decter. It premiered in North America on Freeform. In December 2015, Netflix acquired global rights to Shadowhunters, excluding the U.S., making the series available as an original series a day after the U.S. premiere.
In June 2018, Freeform canceled the series after three seasons, but ordered two extra episodes to properly conclude the series' story.[3][4] During the course of the series, 55 episodes of Shadowhunters aired over three seasons.
Before that though, I have spoken about the cast more or less each time I wrote a review of a season, so I am not going to do that now. Instead, here is a broad comment for each of them that I think is fair. The 1st season had left a bit to be desired looking back, but the work of the entire cast was outstanding and the emotions that they were able to display in this final set of episodes was great and a great send-off for both themselves and fans alike. This also set up careers for the likes of Alberto Rosende, Katherine McNamara, Matthew Daddario and Dominic Sherwood.
Oh the CGI, that I seem to have ripped apart in the beginning of the show (Due to the lack there of), improved so much as time went on! (Maybe they got an actual budget?) The visuals and effects used in this season were much more evident even in the opening scenes, it was the 1st thing I noted from this season! We have the use of magic which naturally takes up most of the effects in the show, but we have the runes, the scenes in general such as in Edem / Siberia and the swords that are apart of this season. When the swords are on screen they need to portray a certain look to them, be it black / white, good / evil, which is something that manage to do extremely well!
Description: The second season of Shadowhunters returns with the Shadow World in upheaval with Valentine and the Circle continuing to grow stronger by the minute and our gang quickly becoming disillusioned with the Clave and their reaction to the recent events. Loyalties will be tested, unlikely bonds will be made, and relationships will be pushed to the limit as the Shadowhunters and their Downworlder friends make their own way in a new world.
I know. I know. Hear me out. Magnus and Alec are one of my favorite couples on the show and in the books. What I love here is the amazing acting between Matthew Daddario and Harry Shum Jr. Their emotional connection is palpable. I felt the heartache and betrayal between these characters.
Alan Van Sprang who played Valentine finally won me over during this season. Most of season 1 I kept wishing they had convinced Jonathan Rhys Meyers to return to the role in the tv show after playing him in the movie adaptation.
Lynn loves reading, sometimes feels like her plants are too much of a commitment (they do need to be watered a lot), and uses WAY TOO MUCH emphasis and exclamation points (!!) when she writes. She spends her days working in an IT department and her evenings reading books, magazines, and way too many Buzzfeed posts. more? e-mail Lynn
Shadowhunters returns for the second half of Season 2 with Shadowhunters and Downworlders reeling from what happened at the New York Institute in the winter finale. As the rift between the two sides grows larger, the team and their Downworld friends and lovers are put in the middle of the dangerous divide. Torn between the Clave's rules and what they feel is right, Clary, Jace, Alec and Isabelle struggle to help forge a new beginning. Relationships will be tested, a new Shadowhunter named Sebastian will join the fray and the Seelie Queen will step out of the shadows in the summer season.
Shortly before production began, Ed Decter "left" the series, supposedly over creative differences.[3][4] He was then replaced by Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer as the new showrunners and executive producers.[5] Some other parts of the production team, such as writers, crew members, and producers, also left.[4][6]
Filming began on August 8, 2016,[12] took a break in November, continued in January 23,[13][14] and is expected to end by May 2017.[15][16][17] The show premiered on January 2, 2017; divided into two parts, the season went on a winter break after its mid-season finale on March 6, and will return for the second half on June 5, 2017.
He's been pining after her for two seasons and never made his move. And for the first time in a long while, he ends up on a date with a great woman on Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 7. Maia (played by Alisha Wainwright) is a perfect catch.
Sure, Clary did look a bit jealous when she found out about Simon's date with Maia. We were teased that Maia would cause tension for this friendship. But that's just it, they're friends and incredibly close. Clary didn't know how to react.
They seem like the better pairing. They're both geeky, they like to watch sci-fi and supernatural films, and they can relate being Downworlders. Besides, Alisha Wainwright and Alberto Rosende have great chemistry together.
It's great seeing the show tackle the issue of Alec's virginity. They didn't initially just jump into things and get it over with. Though, Magnus seemed to be the one more considerate about the matter.
Jace has always been the conflicting yet caring Shadowhunter. He's tortured, but he's also selfless. I would hate to see his character become the type of person I actively avoid on Tinder. Aldertree cannot turn him into a player.
Their body language was closed off. Luke never looked happy to see his sister and she was indifferent to him. This was a nice touch as it provided the mood to explain their history. Though, we barely got scenes of them together.
There could've been plenty of moments to rekindle a friendship. We did get a scene of the two agreeing to work together to stop Valentine. It was a start and one that helped in the long run for the angel.
The angel was calling out to her and seeking her help. (The sound alone of the cries was painful to the ears!) Valentine may be Clary's father, but there must be another reason why the angel sought her out.
Kudos to the editing and special effects teams for the rooftop fight scene. The darkness of the thunderstorm, the glow of the rain water and the sword fighting worked perfectly well together for an action-packed moment. It didn't look cheesy or campy, but there was actual tension in the moment to save the angel.
The introduction of this weapon was pretty random. It was tacked onto the end of an episode that freed Jace from the City of Bones. We know it's dangerous, but nothing much else that isn't revealed in bits and pieces.
Shadowhunters, the television series based on the novels by Cassandra Clare, returns for its second season this January, and viewers can expect a show that will be significantly different in a number of ways, courtesy of new showrunners Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer. Veterans of Smallville, Melrose Place, No Ordinary Family, Alphas, Dominion, Defiance and Guilt, Slavkin and Swimmer are bringing a decidedly more adult(ish) and cinematic approach to the show that should allow it to expand it's already large fanbase.
The focus is on Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara), who, on her eighteenth birthday, discovers that she is a Shadowhunter, one born of angel blood whose destiny is to defend humans from a wide variety of demons. Joining other Shadowhunters, she finds herself immersed in a world of vampires, warlocks, fairies and werewolves.
It happened quickly. We had just done a show for Freeform called Guilt, which was a murder mystery based on Amanda Knox, created by these two brilliant women, and Darren and I ran that show. We met the people at Freeform, and towards the end of that run, we got a phone call from them saying they were looking to make a change on Shadowhunters. To be quite honest, I wasn't too aware of the show. I'd seen some trailers, so we watched season one and we started reading the books and we really got drawn in. It appealed to us in so many ways. We had worked on Smallvile and anyone familiar with that show will know how similar those two worlds are in terms of the hero's journey and questioning your destiny and asking questions of what I thought my life was before. Now, on her 18th birthday, Clary becomes something else that is destined for greatness. All that stuff spoke to us and we were excited by the challenge of taking something that was already cool in season one and trying to raise it to another level.
From a writing standpoint, we felt like there could be more depth in the show. We felt like the characters could have more depth and there could be a more resonant emotionality in the show. In season one, we felt like things moved along very, very quickly, and the show was a little bit more plot-driven as opposed to being character-driven. What appealed to us in the great books that Cassie Clare created were these very interesting characters. It would slow down and you'd have these great moments where you'd get to know them and their back stories. When you're dealing with warlocks that live for centuries, there's so much interesting stuff that we felt could be mined.
In terms of the show visually, a producer/director named Matt Hastings joined Shadowhunters season two, and we worked with Matt on Alphas. He comes from The Originals. We felt like the show visually could be stronger. It could be less colorful and less bright and darker, and the action could be more powerful and more visceral. These visual effects, we could change them and turn them into something that will blow your mind. The portals will be different this year. The warlock magic will be different. The cat eyes will be different. The vamp speed will be different.
We thought the sets were cool. We thought they could be even cooler. We brought in a new production designer. We expanded the look of the show. We tried pushing the actors into uncomfortable places and got them to dig down deep. All of that stuff, I think, plays into a season two that people will find really rewarding. If you liked season one, we think you'll really like season two. If you've never seen the show, I think you'd be thrilled with it as well.
