About 10 years ago I climbed what was then the standard route, White Chuck
Trail to Sitkum Glacier. October 2003 floods severely damaged the approach road
and trail. Currently the easiest approach is North Fork Sauk River Trail to PCT
then cross country to White Chuck Glacier/Disappointment Peak.
This is
ascent account taken from the Green Beckey Guide "Gerdine, Strom, Dubor, and
Bard from the US Geological Survey crew named Glacier Peak and used it as an
observation point. They placed a summit marker during the first ascent in early
summer 1897." "Struggling upward through wisps of fog, they reached a high
point, started to put the flag, and were amazed to see through a sudden hole in
the drifting fog that the actual peak still was far above then. The false summit
they named Disappointment Peak."
That brings up another topic, Fred Beckey's three part Cascade Alpine Guide. The books go beyond a guide to mountain routes but also include history, geology and has many survey accounts. I won't mind visiting Glacier Pk again it's truly a wilderness volcano and would be nice change from crowds we will have on Rainier.
