One of our favorite activities to do with our kids at home and at our workshops is shape collages. Its great as it teaches and reinforces shapes to them. They also get to learn colors and explore textures while they are at it. It is a simple activity with minimal preparation and clean up.

We also had different textures like magazine papers, construction paper, corrugated board, foam, aluminium foils and colored tissue papers. There are also other types of materials that could be used such as fabric scraps, bottle caps, straws that can also be used to create your collage. I love that this is very open, process art and the kids and I talk about the possibilities that we could create. Like a playground, buildings, vehicles, etc. I use this opportunity to discuss about shapes around us and what we can look out for in nature and all around us.

Have these materials ready and invite the child to it. Talk to them about shapes, what they can see, feel the texture and how a square can be cut to make into rectangles, or triangles, and how circles can be cut into halves to create dome shaped, etc.

Then you could ask the child to imagine a scene or an animal that they would like to create. For older children, they would be happy to start working on this project and you could also join in a create your own collage. For younger children, it could be a collaborative effort that parent and child could talk about what they would like to create and do it together.

language development (describing artwork, listening to your words, simple dialogue while working)
fine motor development (glueing, picking up shapes and positioning them on the paper)
shape recognition (recognizing circles and rectangles and the different parts of the shapes)
counting (focusing on how many shapes were used)
1 to 1 correspondence (the concept that when counting each shape has one number)
color recognition (recognizing and naming the different colors used)
creativity (how your child uses the shapes to make the collage)

Print out shape tracers, cut them out and trace the large shapes onto construction paper. Make several of each shape and size. (To make sturdier tracers, use a manila folder or poster board to make tracers.) Give your little ones a whole piece of construction paper, glue and the shapes. Let them start creating their collage.

Tips(to maximize learning): 1. If your kids are younger, trace all of the shapes and cut them out ahead of time. If you think they are old enough to get some experience tracing and cutting; cut a few extra sturdy tracers and let them give it a try. (You should still cut most of them; unless your little one really likes tracing and cutting they will probably be ready to move on after only cutting a couple of shapes). 2. Repeat the names of the shapes over and over, your little one will pick them up quickly. 3. If there is a certain shape you know that your kids have trouble with, focus on that one.

For the last project in Lines and Shapes, I chose a collage picture as another way to review the different types of line and the differences between geometric and organic shapes. We began by reading the book Snippets, A Story About Paper Shapesby Diane Alber. This is a book about how a Red Square does not see how an Organic shape, Snippet, can be part of his perfectly geometric collage picture. Snippet makes him see that shape pictures do not just have to use the same geometric shapes, but shapes of all kinds and sizes. Then I introduced the collage art of Henri Matisse. Matisse was a French painter who became ill when he was older and was confined to a bed. Matisse still had the desire to create, so he began to draw with scissors and make paper cut outs. Sometimes Matisse had an assistant who painted paper for him so that he could cut into organic shapes, usually nature related, and then she would arrange them on the wall for him to see. Once she arranged them for him to his liking, he then glued them in place on paper. Next, I showed his collage, The Parrot and the Mermaid. In this collage, Matisse uses different organic shapes that are leaf and plant like. We played I Spy to find the Parrot and the Mermaid as well as talk about what types of organic shapes we saw in the collage. I gave each artist a large sheet of blue paper and smaller pieces of construction paper for the artists to cut organic shapes on. Each artist was allowed to choose their own colors for their collage and they began to create paper cut outs.

As you walk through the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, take a look at the variety of colors, shapes, and lines depicted throughout the works in this amazing collection of sculptures. These elements of art especially stand out in some sculptures in the garden. In this activity, we will identify distinctive shapes in sculptures and create a shape collage using found household items and pictures.

Image collage is a very useful tool for visualizing an image collection. Most of the existing methods and commercial applications for generating image collages are designed on simple shapes, such as rectangular and circular layouts. This greatly limits the use of image collages in some artistic and creative settings. Although there are some methods that can generate irregularly-shaped image collages, they often suffer from severe image overlapping and excessive blank space. This prevents such methods from being effective information communication tools. In this paper, we present a shape slicing algorithm and an optimization scheme that can create image collages of arbitrary shapes in an informative and visually pleasing manner given an input shape and an image collection. To overcome the challenge of irregular shapes, we propose a novel algorithm, called Shape-Aware Slicing, which partitions the input shape into cells based on medial axis and binary slicing tree. Shape-Aware Slicing, which is designed specifically for irregular shapes, takes human perception and shape structure into account to generate visually pleasing partitions. Then, the layout is optimized by analyzing input images with the goal of maximizing the total salient regions of the images. To evaluate our method, we conduct extensive experiments and compare our results against previous work. The evaluations show that our proposed algorithm can efficiently arrange image collections on irregular shapes and create visually superior results than prior work and existing commercial tools.

You can choose from a variety of shape masks that are organized into several different categories (animals, numbers, abstract, text etc.). Just choose the images to use for the collage and then click on different shape masks to instantly preview the results.

You can customize most shapes by adjusting image spacing, number of images to use, image transparency, orientation, size and more. You can also use background color effects or a transparent background.

Each shape mask can be used with different collage styles, you can switch between standard, honeycomb and circular image displays and also use shadow effects or negative shapes. Your collage can be saved in different sizes and exported to PNG or JPG format.

Overall, ShapeX is very easy to use, produces high quality results and includes a wide variety of shape masks. Customizing the collage can involve a little trial and error at first since none of the application buttons provide mouseover hints and there is no documentation provided. However, once you play with it for a little you should be able to figure out what each button does.

Last blog post, I showed how to make different types of painted papers with watercolor paints. We are still doing distance learning, so my students did this lesson at home. These are the slides that I used to show them how to make a shape collage. Shape is an element of art. I like to show a lot of examples from different artists, contemporary and modern.

With Phinsh Collage Maker, the photo layouts that you can create are endless. This is because of the ability to change the size of your photos, the space between them and the shape representation accuracy. Each time you use the app you can select a new shape and custom collage settings which makes your Photo Collage unique and eye catching with each use!

Using Shape Collage you can use clip arts, text, and funky shapes as templates for your collage. Shape Collage turns your collage of photos into a picture in and of themselves, so you can add greater depth and meaning to your photo narratives.

My Pre-K class was reviewing shapes in their class so I planned the following lesson for them which they all loved. Plan for two lessons when you do this with Pre-K and Kindergarten and you can adapt this idea to other grade levels.
