Ruth has contacted Joshua and I regarding a request for funds from the P & J fund which currently has a balance of about $1200.  The message comes from Charles Carney, active in the Catholic Worker movement, and now very involved in the Poor People’s Campaign.  Mr Carney has helped Deacons to meet needs of several people in terms of housing, food access and transportation.

Please read the below for information regarding this request.

Friend of Rainbow, Charles Carney, has asked Rainbow to consider contributing financially to the Poor People’s Campaign (PPC). Specifically PPC is seeking outright, tax deductible donations to defer  expenses, and, if enough money can be raised, to send busloads of people to the national demonstration to Washington, DC in mid-June. Checks can be made to our fiscal agent, Manhattan Area Peace and Justice Center (MAPJ) and writing Poor People’s Campaign on the memo line. Carney writes this about PPC: “Kansas Poor People’s Campaign is a spiritually based, grassroots campaign to dispel the notion of scarcity in the wealthiest nation ever to exist on the planet. While the wealthy have plenty of lobbyists and much money to make their voices heard we seek the power of nonviolent love and justice to amplify our message. We stand with immigrants and marginalized persons in the U.S. to expose institutional racism and advocate for concrete issues such as expanded Medicaid in Kansas."

I vote “YES”, and would like to hear from the group regarding consensus to provide $300 to the Poor People’s Campaign from the Peace and Justice fund.

Please respond SOONEST so that Ruth can bring this to Council this evening

Yes, I am happy to vote in favor of making this contribution to the Poor People's Campaign. I have been a "fan" of William Barber for quite some time, and my May 5 blog article was about him and the PPC. -- Leroy
