“With funds so scarce, and the needs so great,

it simply makes no sense for us to continue to invest more in our ineffective death penalty.

The opportunity is ripe: It’s time to end the death penalty.”

(Roger Werholtz, former Kansas Secretary of Corrections, Topeka Capital Journal)

The 2018 Legislature opened on Monday January 8th.  As you know from the media, there are many issues confronting the legislators including school funding, prison issues, mental health funding and more.  Those issues could distract legislators from critical issues like death penalty abolition. Thus it is imperative that supporters of abolition let legislators know that we want the Kansas death penalty abolished!  If we remain quiet, they will think it’s ok to let the Kansas death penalty go on.

Please contact your legislators immediately and let them know you support elimination of the Kansas death penalty.  Ask House members to support HB 2167and Senators to support SB 244.

Potential talking points:

  • Kansas’ death penalty costs taxpayers 3 to 4 times more for defense and court costs in death penalty cases than it does in non death penalty cases.

  • Kansans can be protected with the alternative of life in prison without parole.

  • In recent years, Kansas courts have freed two men who were convicted of first degree murder despite being innocent.  We run the risk of executing an innocent person if we keep the death penalty.

  • Kansas death penalty subjects murder victim families to additional years of legal proceedings and uncertainty, thus causing additional pain to these families.

To have the most impact:  use a handwritten card or letter, phone call, or personal email.

To find your legislator's phone and email informationclick here.

If you do not know your legislator's name, you can click here to look it up using your street address.

If you need additional information, please email in...@ksabolition.org or call 785-235-2237.

Please act today.  Your voice could be the one voice that a legislator needs to hear to realize the time is now to end the very flawed, very ineffective Kansas death penalty!

Thanks, Josh, for keeping us informed, that there are important issues besides what’s going on in Washington. It is sometimes hard for those of us who are death penalty abolitionists to use the comparative financial costs as our main argument, but if it sells, then that’s good!
