Friends, as I reflect on our outpouring of support for sending money to the PPC, I decided to test my current obsession with climate change and see if there is any hierarchy in the goals of PPC in relation to us at Rainbow. I have chosen to rate each of the five main goals of the PPC in a very simplistic way:

  1. Can we at Rainbow directly take action to accomplish the goal ourselves, or
  2. Must we at Rainbow merely take indirect action by working with others to achieve long-term change?

I admit up front, that I am obsessed with idea of Rainbow transitioning away from fossil fuels and to sustainable energy usage. Partly this is because my daughter, Heather, in Seattle, has made sustainable energy and economic development her career choice, and partly because my home is not well situated for optimal wind or solar conversion, and partly because the personal consumption of energy by each of us is comparably much less than our church building’s consumption.

So, here I have attached below my thoughts about PPC and Rainbow. Your thoughtful comments would be greatly appreciated.

Phil, thanks for calling this important matter to our attention again. The recent overwhelming support for the Poor People's Campai8gn doesn't mean we can't also think about what we can do to combat global warming. Now through September there will be special emphasis at RMC on the issue white privilege, and that, like the PPC, is an important topic. But perhaps after September we can begin working toward getting more discussion about, and perhaps even some action on, the climate issue. -- Leroy

On this topic I disagree with Phil, and agree somewhat with Leroy. My understanding of the history when Rainbow joined into the Sharing Community shows a much more active church body in this neighborhood. We still maintain the park, host the summer education program and the daycare, but the needs are as much now as they were then, if not more. How many of our members know more than two neighbors? How many of our members have visited in the nearby Baptist church, whose children are often in the park on Sundays? I believe that church building was the home of one of the groups that formed the Sharing Community. Are we "resting on our laurels"? At the end of the day (choose which one) do we go home and retreat or do we engage the needs of others?
Regarding Solar, the orientation of the church roof along with shading from the trees makes solar electric a very poor fit. We would do much better to heed the recommendations of the InfraRed scan done on the church about 3-4 years ago, in which specific locations with poor or missing insulation were identified. We need to do a good audit of the HVAC system also. A major expense is the humidification and it is likely that a better approach could be found.
