Dear CJME supporter,
Today’s Kansas City Star has a full-page statement by the Presbyterian Church USA, United Church of Christ, Alliance of Baptists, American Friends Service Committee, and dozens of other faith organizations of various denominations.
The statement defends the First Amendment right of Americans to use boycotts and other economic acts of conscience to protest Israel’s abuses of Palestinian human rights and violations of international law.
The statement reads in part:
“We are alarmed by legislation recently passed in a number of states penalizing  participation in the nonviolent, grassroots Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement for Palestinian rights, and by similar legislation that is proposed in the U.S. Congress… As faith leaders, we have long used the nonviolent instruments of boycott and divestment in our work for justice and peace.”
Here is a link to Friends of Sabeel North America's site where you can read the full ad and click on the links to take action: https://www.fosna.org/protectfreespeech.
Please share this ad with others and call your Congressional representative and senators (202-224-3121) to oppose proposed anti-BDS legislation (Israel Anti-Boycott Act - S. 720) as a serious attack on the right of free speech.

If you wish to be removed from CJME's mailing list, please respond to this email with "Remove" in the subject line.

Mennonite friends,

Please send the statement far and wide, and use it to contact your state representatives as well as your Congressional ones. The real value of this ad will be how it's used. The link inside the ad should connect you to your Congressional ones. You could also write a letter to the Star saying thank you to the faith groups for standing up for the rights of the oppressed as well as for our First Amendment rights. Thanks so much. Glad to see this, Phil--and to see that it first came from Friends of Sabeel. I am currently reading, and will be writing a view of, a significant book by Naim Stifan Ateek, who was the founder of Sabeel. The book is A Palestinian Theology of Liberation: The Bible, Justice, and the Palestine-Israel Conflict (2017), and I highly recommend it. (Perhaps I will give it to the church library after I am finished with it.)

Friends,
I read the text of the actual bill, S-720, which was introduced rather early this year (mid march). In every place it is referencing "international governmental organizations", and in two places it clearly states that this phrase is to include the United Nations and the European Union. I am strongly opposed to the content and intent of this bill, but I note that the UN has long been viewed with distrust by many in the USA. Nowhere in this document does it say anything against individuals or non-governmental organizations.
Be careful when reacting to what you think you read or what someone else has said.
I fully agree with labeling as unconstitutional the actions such as that in KS that infringe on individuals' rights of free speech. In a sense, this bill is an international extension of that, with a major jump over NGO's. I suspect its effect will be to further isolate the USA in the international trade area.
