My adventure began when I made the decision to accompany my husband to India. Even though I have been back in the States for 1 years, I remain fascinated with India. Once I read about the movie, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, I made plans to see it.
This collage of experiences made me rethink my own odyssey. When I embarked on my Indian travel, I was seeking an adventure, but at the same time I carried personal baggage that hindered my ability to be carefree. My conscious desire to be flexible ebbed and flowed. The more willing I was to sway in the breeze, the more I was able to grasp the richness of India.

The Marigold Hotel, which serves as the main setting of the film, is a charming and somewhat dilapidated establishment that caters to British retirees looking for adventure and new experiences. The hotel is run by Sonny Kapoor, a young and enthusiastic entrepreneur who dreams of expanding his business and opening a second hotel.

Their adventures are feeble and faintly condescending, somewhere between "oh, those magical colours" and "oh, my dear, the smell!" The actors are too accomplished to embarrass themselves, though Ol Parker's screenplay (from Deborah Moggach's novel) makes it a close-run thing.
One shop owner snorts when I say 250 rupees - about $5 - is too much for a canvas bag. "You people, all you ever say is 'too much,' " he grumbles. Is he gaming me? I walk on, feeling embarrassed and defensive. Then I realize: the shop owner, too, is a window, one with a view into ordinariness. For us, this is an exotic adventure. For him, it's another day at work. He will go home with sore feet and a headache from dealing with tourists. I return to his stall and pay the Ru250.
FEBRUARY 2009, THROUGH MY KITCHEN WINDOW: Moonlit snow in Moorhead, Minn., lacks the surreal quality of India from 30,000 feet. The intensity of my Indian adventures has had a chance to cool and integrate. There is no money tree rising through the frozen ground of my back yard. But I nurture the seeds of many stories and that is enough. I have always prided myself on my sense of adventure and was humbled to learn that I am more homebound and less flexible than I believed.
