Hi all,

I'm about to start researching various transit bus options and such
but want to get a rough idea of numbers and flight times.

Depending on the numbers and the spread of arrival/departure times
we'll be looking at different options such as:
* a big bus straight from the airport
* a big/smaller bus from the city
* shuttling from either frankston or crib point station (crib point
is closer, but frankston trains are more frequent)

So if you all could post your details, preferences, budget, and
opinions over the next couple of days it will be a big help as I ring
around the various transport companies.

Cheers,
jb

I am going down to melbourne a day early to catch up with a few people and so is my girlfriend and friend who are both coming to RailsCamp. I am not 100% sure where we are staying atm, but I imagine it will be in the city or close to it so my preference is for a bus that at least goes through the city and can pick us up. I don't have a budget in mind really but I would be interested in approximate pricing. Nevertheless, I won't have any other options of getting to the camp afaik.

Keep in mind that I'm sure plenty of the locals will be driving down,
and asking nicely for a lift from Frankston or Crib Point will be
fine, should the group bus option not work out.

Mind you, I say this as someone without a car or a licence, but
Melbourne Ruby folk are renowned for their helpfulness and generosity
(well, now that I've said that they should be ;)

Are there directions for getting from the airport to Frankston/Crib Point by sheer public transportation?

No doubt! but I'll be with two other people and I think I'll be hard pressed to find someone to give a lift to *three* people. That's just me though. Still a good option. Thanks for volunteering other people Pat :)

One of the train lines is called the Frankston line, and it goes from
the city, through the city loop, and then all the way to Frankston
(bet ya never guessed that :).

From there, you can change to another train that goes further out
that stops at Crib Point, but as John's mentioned, that train doesn't
run as often.

As for airport to city, there's the Skybus, which drops you off at
Southern Cross (formerly Spencer Street) Station, which is on the city
loop.

I'm sure one of us will write this up neatly with dot points, costs,
etc closer to the camp dates.

I've taken the Frankston & Peninsula Airport Shuttle a few times. That'll get us as far as Dromana or Rosebud, if folks with cars could then ferry us across the peninsula to the camp...

Last RC the bus price was $45 return.

Compared to hiring a car which would work out approx. $75 (between 4). Pros: Having car to go to shops. Cons: Have to organise, find 4 people, Driving, Insurance, Accident excess, need a driver (cant drink), have to fill with petrol on return........

Re: Bus, suggest a pickup at Airport and one other central spot (which maybe CBD(if on the way) or near suburban train station etc) for people who arrived early. Also arrange bus to stop at Supermarket (for food and beer).

Ps. About 6 Brisbane people arrive at 1:25pm (3 others are already there early)

Hi John,

A whole bunch of the Sydney folks will be arriving at Tullamarine
Airport at 11.00am Friday morning. The suggestion was that we'd head
into the city for a few hours to have a bite to eat somewhere. I've
counted 14 people so far:

* Nathan de Vries
* Carl Woodward
* Lachie Cox
* Phil Oye
* Matt Allen
* Jason Crane
* Lachlan Hardy
* Andrew Grimm
* Thomas Sinclair
* David Lee
* Myles Byrne
* Tim Lucas
* Michael Koukoullis
* Chris Lloyd

I'm pretty sure everyone in the same list fly out at 3.35pm on the
Monday.

I wouldn't take the Frankston & Peninsula Airport Shuttle. There is FA transport from Dromana and Rosebud to stony point and it's not even close to destination. Your best bet is the franga(frankston) train (about 55 minutes from melbourne city) then the Stony Point train (about 1/2 hour to crib point) which leaves from the same platform you get off the frankston train but on the other side at these times

I've found a charter bus mob that can do an airport -> melb cbd ->
camp run (and the same in reverse) so if your flight is super early I
highly recommend you come into town and experience cosmopolitan
melbourne ;)

I'm sorting out final details now, but it should be leaving the
airport at 3pm on friday, stopping in town maybe 3:30ish, and then on
to the camp just before 5.

The return trip should leave 11am on the monday.

Based on the numbers that replied in this thread originally I've told
the company we've got 30. I'll get an exact max for the bus when
everythings finally set up but we'll work on the assumption there's 30
seats available.

The return trip costs $40 per head, if you only need one end of the
bus trip find someone to split the ticket with.

Respond to this email to book a seat. First in best dressed. We'll
sort out payment method later on.

I'm not a massive fan of assuming anything - but I'm putting every
name on the party plane into the list (in the orig email above).

If you're on the party plane and not in that big long list, still post
to the thread.

If you're on the party plane and have other transport - post to the
thread and i'll take your name off the bus list.

Can any Brisbane people who did NOT make it on the bus let me know if
you want to hire a car, we can get a Tarago which can fit 8, if we get
7 people it works out at $50 each + fuel.

If we do get enough interest I'll (and I think Nigel) will relinquish
our seats on the bus so others can fit, but thats only if we get
enough interest.

Can those of you on this list who shouldn't be please get back to me
ASAP as I need to figure out if we can get away with the 30 seater or
if I need to do a bunch of ringing around for a bigger bus.

The other thing I'd like is a volunteer from those of you who will be
picked up from the airport and another from the city crew to take care

list etc so we can minimise hassle getting you all down to camp.

I'd be happy to volunteer as a wrangler/head-counter for either of the locations. I'd love to go into the city and see a bit of Melbourne, so maybe put me down as the one responsible for keeping track of everyone at the city pickup point?

Note: I have no idea how any of us on the party plane will be getting to the city for hanging out prior to pickup, but I imagine we'll figure it out beforehand or when we land.  Either way, I want to be part of that group. =-)

Trying a reply via google groups web interace too, in addition to the
email reply I just sent to the group, just to be sure. I think last
time my reply just didn't make it in somehow (sorry for the double-
post if both make it though), which is why I'm not in the thread
above.

Please count me in for the maxed-out bus, if there's room, or throw me
on the waiting list. I'm on the party plane and arriving/departing
with everyone else.

Thanks,
-gabe

Aww, crap. I thought I got my name in on the thread before some other
folks, and I'm on the party plane, but I don't see my name on the

Can you please count me in, if there's room? Otherwise I guess I will

I'm chatting with the bus guy this morning and it looks like we can
get 37 on the bus - but it depends on luggage.

Is anyone bringing retarded amounts of luggage? Like anything beyond a
kind of overnighter size bag/case and a sleeping bag? I'm assuming
not, but if you were planning on bringing a big matching set of
luggage, now would be the time to tell me.

Hey Guys

Sorry we're really late to the party!!
Have added myself (Richard) and Tyson to the list at the front of the
discussion, which then makes 37, but discussion makes it obvious the
bus seems already full? If so take it as waiting list request.

Obviously not sure if there is space on the bus at this late stage.
If bus is full, anyone else happy to +2 people to their trip / put
another car together?

Arriving Melbourne from Adelaide on Thursday night, so let us know
where people meeting in Melbourne CBD on friday.

Since we're T-1 day, can we lock down the details of where the bus will pick up at the airport and where/when it will pick up in the city?

At the airport, the meeting point is in the centre road (where busses can stop) out the front of qantas domestic. The coach will have a sign in the left window saying "Allday coach services - Railscamp"

I'm waiting on an email back from the bus company for the city details. I'm not sure where coaches can pull up park in the cbd - I'll try for something close to a decent pub :)

If i haven't heard by noon, I'll call the driver directly. Expect another email in the early arvo.

For the Iphone/Android geeks, you could always post a glympse URL to
the list, showing where the bus is at any time:
http://www.glympse.com/
I'm starting to use this a fair bit to coordinate meetups with my
partner; not sure how it works on iPhone, but on Android it's free and
simple to use.

OK, the city meetup point is outside the Radisson Flagstaff Hotel 380 William St

http://rubyurl.com/KQ0d is a google map of the location.

The bus is leaving the airport at 3pm - is anyone actually getting on the bus at the airport? and if so, how many of you?

I think Gabe has volunteered to be the shepard for the city group of campers, can someone put their hand up for the airport people?

Can everyone on the bus bring 2x $20 notes - I'll take the money for the trip when the bus arrives on friday and I wont be carrying change or anything.

There's a Dan Murphy underground in the QV building (where I work!
very convenient) near the corner of Lonsdale and Russell streets:

Mind you, you need to go into the underground parking to go there, so
it might be a bit much of a hassle. But they've got a good range, and
better prices than Coles...
