A bunch of us in Wollongong were thinking our town would make a great spot for a Railscamp.

Aside from all the great venues at the University of Wollongong that we could use for formal sessions, there's the ocean for swimming/surfing/etc, the escarpment for mountain biking, and much much more. All of which is a very comfortable train ride from either Sydney or Sydney Airport.

What's the next step towards turning this idea into reality?

Steven.

Hi Steven

By and large, Rails Camps are organised by people who turn up to previous ones - so, the first step may be making sure you're at the next one (which will be in Melbourne in the second quarter of 2013).

We also try to make sure Rails Camps get shared around the states - the last few have been in Tasmania, Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales (Byron Bay). Hence, it could be that Canberra or Perth get first dibs on RC 14 in late 2013, should people step up to the plate. That said, you're making noise, so that's a great start :)

Cheers

Yes, I have spoken to a couple people in those states trying to see if there is interest…. This is the 2nd request from NSW about hosting it..

Cheers,

Nigel

Thanks all. I'll aim to get to the Melbourne Railscamp and to bring as many Wollongong folk as possible.

In the mean time, we might also look at holding our own local event for newbies along the lines of "learn to build your own website in a weekend", with a curriculum taken straight from this: http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html

Cheers,

Steven.

It's also worth mentioning that Wollongong's recently hosted Hackagong, our first hackathon in the area. There's a quickly growing community of talented developers in the area that, coupled with it being in close proximity to Sydney, would make Wollongong a great place to host this.

I was at Hackagong. It was awesome. I thoroughly endorse the above statement.

Ben announced new dates for it at RubyConf AU - I'm pretty sure it's 21st-24th June. Tickets haven't been released yet.
