I heard that we had one. I need to secure childcare for this weekend.

Hi there, my name is Khara and I used to be an active member of this group.  I have since moved out of SF, first to Reno and now in Denver.  I still follow your email string bc I learn a lot from them now that I host meetups for Women and Moms Who Code.  My burning question is this: How do you provide childcare to moms learning how to code?

Where do you get the money to pay these sitters?
What is the ratio of child care takers to children?
How long do the child care takers work?

TIA!
Khara

Hi Khara,

We often do supervised playgroups onsite at our workshops. It's technically not childcare because the parents are still responsible for their kids, but we'll usually hire 1 person to hang out with 2-3 kids. We rarely have more kids than that, at least in SF.

We pay the people who supervise the playgroups with money we get from sponsorships, either for the workshop specifically, or from our general funds.

Workshops last from about 9am-4:30pm, so they are there the whole time.

Also I have found that sometimes things come up last minute for folks with kids so I usually arrange in advance two pay a smaller fee (maybe for 2-3 hours time) if we need to cancel last minute.  It's helpful to talk about that kind of thing in advance.

In NYC we use http://www.nypinchsitters.com/

Not sure if there is a similar service elsewhere in the country. But they've been really helpful to us as we can schedule pretty late to get someone to cover the handful of children we've had on occasion.
