Teacher retro
Good
  • It was great for the students for teachers to go on tangents in order to explain things not in the curriculum!
  • Job Board is a great curriculum for introducing CRUD concepts!
  • East Bay! East Bay!! East Bay!!!
Some Thoughts
  • Can we have an open source related demo before installfest to get people inspired?
  • Does the Sign Up for Events button work? There seemed to be some skepticism about it
  • Having FE concepts gets students excited! Can we introduce some into Green or Blue level curricula?
Make it better!
  • Organizers should have advertised the East Bay mailing list before and after, so people could sign up for further events or discussions within the East Bay community
  • During installfest, folks asked questions about what SQL is and what databases are - some sort of explanation to point them to would be helpful.
  • Lessons esp at Blue level should attempt to impart some programming (language) concepts, e.g., what do the different class method types like "private" mean?
  • Can we introduce Hashes in the Blue curriculum?

Thanks for sharing!!

Could someone who was there expand on this point?
  • Does the Sign Up for Events button work? There seemed to be some skepticism about it
Is that about Bridge Troll somehow?

to RailsBridge Workshops
Hi - that was my note :)

One of the vols said they thought they weren't sure if checking the box at the end of the RSVP form, that says, "Notify me of future events," actually does something. I haven't had a chance to look at the code - does this cause the vol to get signed up to a mailing list? Maybe because he didn't get a confirmation, or a verification email, he thought nothing happened, even if it had.

Overall, this came about because we were talking about being more explicit about telling people to sign up for mailing lists/groups, and listing all known groups at some point during the workshop.

HTH!

"Notify me of future events" means that Bridge Troll will send you a notification the next time an event in that chapter is announced, so not a separate mailing list kinda thing -- just internal to Bridge Troll.

Would there be interest in a PR that changed it to "Notify me of future BridgeTroll events", plus a link to perhaps a page listing loc-specific mailing lists?

Do other chapters have mailing lists they use to facilitate off-workshop conversations?

Am I an email dinosaur, in this age of Slack and Snapchat?

Well, Bridge Troll is two words, so there's that ;P

I don't think a page listing location specific mailing lists exists right now, and I'm not sure if there'd be enough content to justify it. Really, I would hope that getting email updates from Bridge Troll announcing new workshops would be enough. If anything, I'd probably want make any feature configurable either on a chapter (i.e. RailsBridge East Bay) or organization (GoBridge) level, since multiple *Bridges use the app.

I think helping highlight the ways that chapters communicate and how to get involved would be a good thing to think about, but doing it the context of event announcements doesn't really make sense to me.

What would be a good place to show ways of communicating with the various chapters, or for suggesting to attendees how they can stay in touch?

Maybe something we can add to the Keep Learning page, as content on railsbridge.org, rather than trying to add a feature to Bridge Troll? Maybe #72 is in fact this discussion?

Yeah, I think that issue about making chapter pages on railsbridge.org would be pretty rad to have happen!

Okay, I might be interested in this - I wrote up some thoughts on the issue itself.
