Hey all,

Last fall, a Mount Holyoke student asked if we could run a workshop for the CS club there sometime. Their school is about 2 hours west of Boston, north of Springfield.

Here's some more information:

we would love to run a two-part workshop (perhaps in adjacent rooms)– one for CS majors who know other languages already, and one for students who are new to programming. This way we can provide a great opportunity for CS students to learn an incredibly useful language that isn't offered in MHC courses, and also for students who are interested in trying out coding without the commitment of a full semester course.

Based on past events, we've estimated that at least 40-50 students would be likely to participate.

Is there anyone who might be interested in helping out with this? I'd gladly help coordinate this and also be a TA.

Let me know - thanks!

Hey Melissa and all,

I'd love to help and be a TA for it. When were you thinking?

Oops, forgot to mention that.

The dates she suggested were February 27-28 or March 6-7.

Ok and would we be expected to drive out there each time for each day? Would we be able to adjust the hours for travel if we would need to commute each day?

Here’s some more info I got from her:

> We would like to set you all up in a hotel room (we have a hotel on campus- Willits Hallowell) Friday night if possible– how many rooms would you anticipate needing assuming we do 2 people per room? We would also like to provide you with dinner Friday night, and breakfast + lunch on Saturday.

This sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me. If we could get a group of maybe 5-10 TA’s, this might work.

Depending on when the event is planned for, I may be able to go, but I think we may need to rethink the curriculum if these students have a stronger computer science background.

I'm also interest, depending on when it is.

Ditto, depending on the dates.

I've found it takes about 2-3  hours to get out to the Amherst/Northampton  area from Boston on a Friday afternoon, depending on traffic.  Long weekends and bad weather take longer. We should factor that in, either in their start time or in our travel planning.

We could teach the Ruby + Rails curriculum to those with programming background, and Ruby-only to newcomers.

This would be 2 weeks after our *next* regular workshop.

FYI - this workshop has been cancelled. They've double-booked some events and will not be able to squeeze anything in this year. We'll probably revisit this in the Fall.

Thanks to everyone who was interested!
