There's a WWCode (Women Who Code) study group that meets on Tuesdays that Erik and I met with two weeks ago to pitch the idea that the RailsBridge app [1] could be a good way for them to hone their skills. We found that aside from coding skills, people were unfamiliar with open source process, so we planned a series of study groups to focus on that, first with presentations, then planned sessions pairing with mentors.
Last Tues, Sarah Mei and I each took a story and did a group presentation resolving the issue. I demonstrated setting up a staging server on Heroku and she improved the layout on the front page. Then on Sunday (yesterday), we got a small group of the more experienced study group members to help us get ready for Tuesday pairing sessions. We ended up realizing that the app needs quite a bit of refactoring since it has already been through a lot of changes in its short life and they decided that they would like to have everyone build the app from scratch using the tests that are already written. We'll do it presentation-style with everyone following along, then post the presenter's app at the end of the night.
So, if you are in SF and available on Tues, we could use some more mentors. (They have been thru Ruby Monk and the Hartl Rails Tutorial, but many are still learning the basics of Ruby and Rails. Some will be comfortable going at a faster pace and we thought it would be great if we had mentors to pair with the more advanced engineers and also to help people who might be newer and struggling with installation or basic concepts.)
