Venue: is it all booked in for 2-4pm on this Saturday?

Logistics: do we need to bring a projector for the venue?

State of Origin: after QLD win on Wednesday, should all the NSW people have to wear maroon t-shirts/tops? Lots of QLDers coming down for the 1st meeting so we look forward to seeing this.

Agenda: can we clone the Melb.rb agenda and per-meeting organisational system? Each meeting a different person is in charge of rounding up talks etc? And for the agenda we start with "New and shiny in the Rails world" news summaries, then long talks then lightning talks?

Cheers
Nic

Hi all,

2009/6/22 Dr Nic Williams <dr...@mocra.com>

Venue: is it all booked in for 2-4pm on this Saturday?

Just waiting for confirmation from Zubin - he was booking for 3pm so as not to push to friendship too much on the first visit (they're opening 1hr early for us, after all...)

Will post address, map link, directions, etc. today.

Logistics: do we need to bring a projector for the venue?

I suspect we will need to bring one. If someone can oblige, that would be awesome, just in case.

State of Origin: after QLD win on Wednesday, should all the NSW people have to wear maroon t-shirts/tops? Lots of QLDers coming down for the 1st meeting so we look forward to seeing this.

I can only assume this is a reference to some sport which people play when they venture outside to where that glowing ball thing lives. Myself, I have never dared to venture past the verandah for fear of the sky people plucking me from my earthly home.

Agenda: can we clone the Melb.rb agenda and per-meeting organisational system? Each meeting a different person is in charge of rounding up talks etc? And for the agenda we start with "New and shiny in the Rails world" news summaries, then long talks then lightning talks?

Does anyone have a copy of the aforementioned agenda? Sounds like a good plan to me.

I'll bring one.

I think my last sentence summarises it.

Perhaps the theme of the 1st meeting could be "Showcasing the Awesomeness of Northern NSW" to all the QLD guests?

Who can do 10-20 min talks on a rails plugin/rubygem they like or wrote? Or show off a project they've been working on?

Hey Jason,

Looks like you didn't receive my response on June 18th, so here it is
again:

> Just spoke to Buddha Bar. There's a drum and bass thing on that evening, so the private room is not available because they'll be setting up for that during the day. However, they've agreed to set another area up for us which is not sealed off, but I'm told it is still separate.
>
> So we're locked in for Sat 27th @ 3pm... should be good!
> Let me know if I can help with anything else.

re projector
Since the private room is unavailable that day, a projector may not be
viable. Didn't realise this was required, as I had understood that
this first meetup was going to be informal. Plus there's only a
handful of us so perhaps we could crowd around a laptop this time.
Hope that's not a problem!

Thanks,
Zubin

If ppl come to the first meeting and see that its just "ppl hanging around" they mightn't come back, perhaps? I can only guess the mindset of a visitor though.

I'll bring the projector anyway as there might be somewhere to use it.

Will we have tables + powerpoints? :)

To be honest, I was thinking along the same lines as Zubin for the first meeting - rather informal so as to give everyone a chance to meet and greet again, start working out who's interested in giving talks down the track, how frequently people are likely to be able to make subsequent meetings, and all that jazz.

I also figured it would be a chance to see how well the venue suits, without it being a disappointment if it wasn't conducive to presentations, etc.

That said, if we have a projector, at least we have the chance to use it if we can.

From what I understood, there are tables, etc. available. I assume there are powerpoints, as the place does provide wifi...

Woohoo, free wifi.

Though I did just get iPhone tethering working :)

Hi all,

Full details :

Where: Buddha Bar, 1 Skinners Shoot Road, Byron Bay

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=buddha+bar,+byron+bay&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=46.27475,59.326172&ie=UTF8&ll=-28.645101,153.604617&spn=0.025196,0.028968&z=15&iwloc=A

And a less accurate, but possibly more useful map here : http://www.buddhabarbyronbay.com/contact-us

When: 3pm, Saturday the 27th of June 2009

What: First meeting may be a little informal, but if anyone wants to do a presentation or the like, bring what you need.

Dr. Nic's bringing a projector, but we aren't sure whether we'll be able to use it. Place has Wifi though.

Might pay to bring a power board with your kit, just in case they are in short supply.

Contact: Any questions on the day, or if you get lost on the way, give me a shout on 0439 464 175. Hopefully I'll have mobile reception at the place. Failing that, an email or twitter DM to @j_stirk, as I'll have them on the phone as soon as I have wifi.

Special thanks to Zubin who arranged the venue.

See you there!

Jason

Any chance of getting the ftp details to byronweb.org?

Do we need to do a session at the next ByronWeb meeting about "how to deploy a web app without FTP"?

Real programmers "git clone" then "git pull"

Bah, real programmers use something like capistrano, or have written a
script to ssh to the server and run git pull for them

no real programmers glare at their servers until they are guilt tripped into deploying themselves.

To deploy? surely git push and nothing else? ;)

That said, does someone want to actually help the guy out and give him
some information on publishing the website?

I can help him set up capistrano etc, but I have no idea about the server details for him to login first. Who registered that domain?

Zubin'll have them - he doesn't lurk on the list often, so I'll send you his direct email.
